My letter in @washingtonpost today: Medical schools need to bring back standardized tests to level the applicant playing field! Link to article and full text below : Regarding the Feb. 23 news article “Yale will again require standardized test scores for admission”: “I commend Yale University and other institutions that, despite acknowledging the imperfections of standardized tests, recognize their pivotal role as essential data points in admissions decisions. Nowhere is this truer than in the high-stakes realm of medical education. The recent trend of devaluing standardized tests has had detrimental effects on medical students. Given the prevalence of pass/fail grading in most medical schools and the recent shift to a similar model in major licensing exams, exceptionally talented students from diverse backgrounds find it challenging to distinguish themselves. In the absence of standardized grading, residency admissions committees are forced to rely on problematic metrics such as flawed medical school rankings and research publications, neither of which reliably correlate with a student’s capacity to provide excellent patient care. Beyond assessing clinical knowledge, high standardized test scores may also serve as indicators of students’ proficiency in crucial areas of clinical practice such as time management, self-discipline and reasoning. Though it is imperative to implement equity-focused reforms in medical exams, we should not discard scored tests and instead retain those elements that help us select the best future doctors.”

The Annual Medical School Graduate Survey is underway! A big shoutout to Emory University School of Medicine, Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, Mercer University School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, and PCOM Georgia for their support in administering the Medical School Graduate (MSG) Survey! Annually, the GBHCW diligently collects and analyzes responses provided by medical schools to publish a report delving into insights into medical education in Georgia. The MSG Survey is read by policymakers, medical school administrators, graduate medical education administrators, and various government and non-government agencies interested in Georgia’s medical school pipeline. Once the survey concludes on May 31st, we'll analyze the responses to provide a comprehensive overview of medical education in Georgia. The results will then be announced and posted on our website later in the year, so stay tuned for updates! "Future physicians in the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine embark on week-long journey of learning, community-building, preparing for medical education"

I frequently write about the critical need for increased investment in primary care, which will help us build our primary care workforce and recruit the best and brightest in medicine to choose primary care specialties. Building a robust primary care workforce requires us to think comprehensively about the issues that have led us to where we are today - loss of autonomy, insufficient investment/payment, administrative burden, and a lack of focus on the value of comprehensive primary care. Another issues that needs greater attention is the role of medical schools in creating a pro primary care culture. This morning, I came across an op-ed written by a fourth-year family medicine student that reminded me of just how bright the future of family medicine is. Medical student Danielle Gabuzda wrote eloquently about the need to address medical school cultures, to bolster primary care experience in medical schools, and to invest in primary care. These are big challenges. Thankfully, there are people like the future Dr. Gabuzda entering primary care who are committed to identifying and addressing shortcomings so that we can make primary care for all a reality.

🔬 A study in JAMA Network Open, led by Boatright et al. (2023), offers groundbreaking insights into DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) strategies in U.S. Graduate Medical Education. This research identifies effective practices and paves the way for transformative change in medical education. 📊  Key Findings:  - Bias Mitigation Training: Significant focus on training interviewers to understand and mitigate implicit bias and how racism and discrimination influence admission processes.  - DEI-Focused Committees and Statements: The creation of inclusive selection and DEI committees, along with mission statements explicitly including DEI values.  - Retention Efforts for Faculty Diversity: Strategies to improve the retention and diversity of faculty members, addressing the crucial need for role models and mentors from diverse backgrounds.  - Outreach to Historically Excluded Groups: Programs actively reaching out to pre-medical students and educational institutions to foster a more diverse applicant pool. 🌐 Why This Matters:  - These strategies are vital for bridging the diversity gap in medical education, leading to improved healthcare quality.
