Audaces fortuna juvat
My past is much longer than my future. AI is juxtapositioned with speedy advancement with speedy danger. Feeling good that there is hope with bold visionaries such as Sasha. The future is in good hands.
Yesterday's #FutureofBritain conference hosted by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change was a great success👏 Watching virtually doesn't have quite the same impact, but the high-calibre speakers and discussions more than made up for not being there in person 💯
Here are five moments that stood out for me:
1️⃣ Exponential growth 📈 Matt Clifford reported that computational power in AI & tech development has increased x100 million in the last decade 🤯 I guess it's safe to say that public and private investment won't match that rate of change, but...
2️⃣ We need a new national purpose 🚨 Great to see William Hague and Tony Blair discussing AI & tech as one of the top defining missions for the UK in the coming years. Ambitions for long-term growth are for the birds unless we can harness the potential for the UK to become an AI superpower.
3️⃣ Revamping mindsets on healthcare 💉 Wes Streeting was excellent on his mission to supercharge an #NHS fit for the 21st century. Key soundbite: the NHS is no longer simply a public services department, it's an economic growth department.
4️⃣ The case for digital identity 💾 Rajeev Chandrasekhar's sketch of how #digitalidentity has enabled 1.2 billion Indians to "leapfrog" a generation of missed opportunity was fascinating. It seems a no brainer, and I was super disappointed to see the new Labour government slam the door closed recently without any real debate!
5️⃣ Lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Pat McFadden on the importance of message discipline... but I'm still none the wiser on what is the role exactly of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster 🤔
In today's rapidly evolving landscape, technology stands as a catalyst, transforming every facet of our lives. And perhaps nowhere will this be more acutely felt than at work. By harnessing the power of AI, organizations and individuals alike can reinvent the way work gets done, leading to more productivity, creativity, innovation and fulfillment. We’re just getting started on that journey, and the potential in front of us is limitless.
I’m looking forward to joining Ayanna Howard at Future of Work: A New Innovation Playbook hosted by Washington Post Live. Together, we'll explore the evolving digital landscape that is redefining modern work.

After a ChamberRVA trip to D.C. to meet our legislators earlier this year, I assembled a group of thought leaders to form a think tank around AI in RVA. We are contemplating questions like, How do we prepare workers for tomorrow's world of work? How can we become more competitive as a region? How can we use AI for economic development? What tools can we assemble to make this happen?
These conversations are currently taking place around the globe, but Richmond has a unique ability to harness this technology to usher in inclusive and sustainable growth. With $10 billion in the development pipeline and a host of Fortune 500 and advanced technology companies in the area, we can become a hub for AI that provides tangible benefits for everyone.
Here are my thoughts on what RVA looks like in an AI-shaped future, from the 26th International Business Forum at Virginia Commonwealth University - School of Business.
Thanks to Dr. Van Wood for the invitation to sit in as a panelist in this exciting conversation.
Personalizing Politics: GenAI’s Path to a United Europe 🤝
The shift brought by GenAI to European Union communications is sparking an electrifying conversation, as highlighted by Harold Tor-Daenens. With the EU navigating the complexities of the AI Act, it's time to harness this transformative tool for a more dynamic and inclusive engagement strategy. 🤖
Reaching an audience as diverse as the continent itself—from tech-savvy youth to engaged seniors, from bustling cities to tranquil towns —demands a nuanced approach. GenAI, our digital Rosetta Stone, could dissolve linguistic and cultural barriers, ensuring messages are as varied and nuanced as the audience itself.
Imagine a world where messages from Ursula von der Leyen resonate directly in the hearts and minds of Europe’s youth, each hearing her in their mother tongue. This isn’t just about communication; it’s about creating a tailored, personal connection. 🧠
Harold's insights propel us #OneStepAhead, transforming EU communications into a journey that is inclusive, personal, and deeply impactful. We're not just bridging gaps; we want to build connections that make the EU’s voice not only louder but also clearer and closer to every citizen. 📢
Share your insights below. Let’s discuss how technology is shaping our future.

Reflecting on the EU's AI Act and the US's Inflation Reduction Act, it's clear the relationship between regulation and innovation is complex. These regulations and policies, while often seen as constraints, can paradoxically financially benefit certain sectors, particularly big tech.
At the All-In Summit, Bill Gurley offered insights into regulatory capture, especially in telecoms and healthcare, revealing a bias towards industry over public interest. A key issue is how over-engineering and lack of competition impede technology adoption, stifling innovation and raising concerns about government transparency and accountability. This scenario also poses a risk to the integrity of democracy and capitalism.
Our goal should be to develop regulations that protect public interests and foster innovation, paving the way for creative exploration. Gurley’s presentation, a blend of enlightenment and masterful storytelling, reminds us of the importance of informed dialogue in shaping our future.
How can we create a regulatory environment that supports innovation while upholding societal values?

Today, I was fortunate enough to participate in The Governor General’s Symposium: Building a Safe and Respectful Digital World. It was a day full of conversation about how we can create safe spaces online.
Key take aways for me:
1. We need to work on creating a safe space for people to be leaders in Canada. Many of the panelists talked about how they were attacked to a violent degree. Even for sharing information about public health.
2. We need to start teaching people digital literacy early, and continue to educate ourselves regularly. As technology changes, we need to keep learning.
3. Empathy and kindness are paramount. It's hard to remember when you're faced with someone with views that are in conflict with your own. Be kind, and try to be understanding of everyone's experience. One panelist shared, you get back whatever you give, but four times are much.
4. Call people in, instead of calling them out. We need to have open discussions, and be open to perspectives. We need compassion, and context to have meaningful conversations.
Thank you to everyone who made today possible. This is a topic I'm very passionate about and we need to ensure we are all part of the conversation. Especially with advancing #ai technology. I'm looking forward to putting some of these ideas into practice.

"The 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals a new paradox at the heart of society. Rapid innovation offers the promise of a new era of prosperity, but instead risks exacerbating trust issues, leading to further societal instability and political polarization."
