The Power of Vulnerability: The Story of QF32 ✈️ I was intrigued by the story of flight QF32 and how its pilot handled the situation. When Richard Champion de Crespigny was the pilot in command of QF32, disaster struck mid-flight. An engine failure caused massive damage to the plane, creating a situation that no one would ever want to face. But Richard’s response to the crisis was extraordinary—and it wasn't just about technical skills. What set him apart was his decision to over-communicate. Instead of withholding information, he kept passengers updated frequently and honestly, even in the face of terrifying circumstances. Disclosing the truth, humility and personal vulnerability makes human beings more trusting. If you are honest about something negative, people will believe you and respond with trust and support. So how does vulnerability feed the expectation of truthfulness and build trust? What’s critical to understand here is that, by being vulnerable, humble, exposed, we create the impression that we are open and transparent. By humbling ourselves rather than talking ourselves up, we establish an impression of having nothing to hide — this impression very often converts to trust and engagement. By sharing the truth and showing vulnerability, Richard was able to keep passengers calm and maintain trust—even in a life-threatening situation. His approach wasn’t just about solving the problem; it was about creating a sense of security and trust. This approach works for business and even your own personal life. Being humble and showing vulnerablility isn't weakness but actually strength. People respect that and trust is build. Is this possibly self-esteem at its higher form? P.S. Polar Tales and Software Trails In the early 1900s, nations wanted to show dominance by first reaching the South Pole. It was a race to the pole, the south pole. Two teams took up this challenge. Robert Falcon Scott led the British team, and Roald Amundsen led the Norwegian team. In 1911, both teams started around the same time from different locations. The British expedition leaders wanted to push as much as possible on a good weather day. So they traveled 40-50 miles in good weather conditions, but the team couldn't proceed when the weather was terrible. On the other hand, the Norwegian expedition leader decided they would cover 15 miles daily regardless of weather conditions. When the weather was good, they stopped after 15 miles and restrained themselves. They had an energy reservoir to push through the 15 miles in bad weather conditions. When the Norwegian team was 45 miles from the final destination, the temptation would be to finish the distance in a day as they were unaware of where the British team was. Instead, they finished the journey in 3 days by following 15 miles the day rule. They had chosen pace over push and knew what was enough for them in a day. The British team reached the destination 30 days after the Norwegian crew. Unfortunately, all the British team members died on the way back as they couldn't bear the exhaustion and extreme weather conditions; on the other hand, the Norwegian team returned safely. When I was part of a team building a software tool that checks Code non-conformance for the Motor Industry, the team had to work an average of 12 hours, including weekends, to adhere to the strict timeline. It was manageable for a few months, but soon, the burnout started to catch up within the team. Team members began to fall sick, motivation started to drop, and in a quarter-time, a stable team began to crumble with a set of resignations followed. Whether it's an arduous journey to the South Pole or developing a software product, knowing your limits helps. Push will hamper progress. Pace will outcast push. Try to be more Reasonable than Rational. Rational individuals make decisions based on Excel sheets, productivity, and revenue numbers. Reasonable people make them based on the discussion with others. People do not want a logical strategy and need a plan that maximizes how well they sleep at night. Define enough for you. Define enough for a day and enough for a week. Avoid Social comparisons. There is no need to risk what you have and what you need for what you don't have and don't need. #stories

I recently had the opportunity of driving up a mountain on a two-lane road, near 9,000 feet above sea level with no guard rails. I'm a worst case scenario person and the what if's left me white knuckled as I clutched the steering wheel. This experience required me to focus and have an unwavering commitment to the journey. I believe it parallels the challenges faced when deploying broadband in rural America. Both endeavors require navigating difficult terrain, overcoming obstacles, and staying dedicated to reaching the summit. In both scenarios, the path is tense with uncertainty. The mountain road offers breathtaking views but also dangerous curves and steep drop-offs, requiring drivers to remain vigilant and persistent. Similarly, deploying broadband in rural areas involves navigating regulatory hurdles, be mindful of funding, and building infrastructure to remote locations. The absence of guard rails on the mountain road symbolizes the unknown in today's legislative and regulatory world and the need for innovation and resourcefulness in the face of challenges. A quote by Lao Tzu resonates deeply with this analogy: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." This wisdom reminds us that every monumental task, no matter how daunting, starts with the first step and progresses through continued effort and perseverance. To my colleagues in the broadband industry, I encourage you to draw inspiration from this analogy. Just as a driver cautiously but determinedly ascends a treacherous mountain road, we must persist in our efforts to connect all customers in rural America. The road may be difficult, and the obstacles may seem insurmountable at times, but the reward of bringing connectivity to underserved communities is worth the struggle. Keep pushing forward, step by step, and together we will reach the summit, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.
