Chile launched my environmental career; I got my first job in environmental economics at Outotec (now Metso) because of being on the podium at CESCO Week in Chile in 2016. That launched my career, and now, thanks to some fantastic funding, I am going back to teaching live with Ben Murphy, and we even get to do this in San Juan, Argentina. I pinch myself about everything I have learned in the last eight years. We will cover topics like: How do we maximize the value of a mine in South America? What is the minimum mine size ore body, and what is the value of community water systems? More importantly, how do we talk about the value of the natural capital, the actual cost of tailings, and how do we best use South America’s resources? I can’t wait eight years from now to see where these graduates end up long-term, but if they are anything like our online students, I have a feeling this is going to be impactful. Oh, and if you did not get a slot, we had record demand, I think, more than five applications per slot. I can’t wait to see you all in Santiago and San Juan in less than a month. I'll start adding disclaimers on whether I'm talking GPM Global (Green Project Management®), Gaia Education, Texas A&M University, or just "Dr. Pace thoughts". This is a Gaia Post... Did you know it's Compost Awareness Week? The irony of not being aware... A bit ago, I posted that we can all make a difference (collectively), and that's what we really need to focus on (not the stress of individuals making changes, but the power of groups). I've learned that composting is stupid easy. Have trash? If it can be composted, throw it in this bin instead of that bin. Done. (Now, it can be more complicated than that if you want it to be, but it doesn't have to be.). I had an old cotton t-shirt -> cathartically rip it to shreds and throw it in the compost bin. boom, composted. (Here's something you probably didn't know - composting can decrease methane, can serve as a carbon bank, can be used as a fertilizer, in addition to just *not* adding to the volume of trash in the dump). To go with International Compost Awareness Week (or ICAW if you're in the gang), Gaia released the below update about its Curiosoil project. We welcomed two interns from Griffith Sciences Partnerships Office to join us over the summer semester in an effort to increase exposure of our industry to university students and hopefully get them hooked on the urban water sector as a career of choice. We worked with the students to develop projects of interest to them that built on work already being explored through the Directorate. Today we'd like to introduce you to Jarod Booth, a second year Environmental Science student with an interest in environmental risk management, analysis of environmental performance and environmental legislation. Jarod has been working with Louise Reeves to develop a guide or “Cheat Sheet” designed to support sewerage service providers, employees and customers to make informed decisions on reducing the impact of emerging contaminants, especially for trade waste. The guide will highlight chemicals of concern and will target source control. It aims to be simple enough to understand without in-depth knowledge of the subject and will be backed up by a report which will reference and explain all the material mentioned in the guide. Jarod started by sourcing data from the Water Research Australia Emerging Chemicals Database for National Awareness (Echidna) database to get a view of the most common contaminants in wastewater and their risk based on a mix of bioaccumulation, persistence, and toxicity rankings. Further data for presence, types and sources of contaminants will be sourced elsewhere to pinpoint industries of concern to focus on. The current data will be refined to include usage for the chemicals and focus on a mix of the most common and/or potentially hazardous. We introduced Jarod to Kelly Hopewell at City of Gold Coast to provide insight into this issue from experienced industry members and to help refine the project and decide on ways to target the information around certain concerning industries (pharmaceuticals, etc) or contaminant groups (PFAS, flame retardants). Additionally, Jarod is looking into evidence of contaminant transfer based on usage after recycling (lipophilicity resulting in increased uptake and bioaccumulation), linking back to data from Echidna for concerning chemicals. Throwback. In 2019, the first year dedicated to giving back to society. Sharing experiences and exchanging stories with younger siblings of UPM students. #SEBA 11.0: Sejam Bersama Alumni (SEBA), an initiative organized by the UPM Alumni Center. I had the opportunity to share my life story as a former UPM student and my experiences as a planter, exchanging insights with UPM students. Alhamdulillah, this experience not only boosted my confidence to continue sharing but also highlighted areas that still need improvement. Towards the end of the program, a group of Bachelor of Plantation Management students approached me with an interesting question. One of them asked, "Is it true that you are an Estate Manager? I did my practical training at an estate, and most of the managers there were quite strict and serious." With a smile, I replied, "We are Planters, inclined towards diversity. For me, the term 'strict' is subjective, depending on behavior, communication style, and the intention to share knowledge. It's important to remember that people's perspectives also influence our assessment of someone's character." "Nevertheless, we cannot judge a career solely based on one characteristic. Each individual has unique traits that contribute to the harmony and strengths of a task." "So, someone's firmness or gentleness doesn't necessarily create fear or absolute trust. One way our national Sea Grant Program is providing students with opportunities in the marine and coastal sciences.

🇸🇰 TUKE project team organized a peer learning training where the green competence framework was discussed. The aim of the training was to better understand the principles of green competences so that they could be better implemented in the actions of the project Capacity2Transform on the territory of the Košice Region. Discussions focused on the exchange of experiences and best practices in terms of knowledge on green competences.
