Such opportunities arrive by selection. An organization with well-defined goals would procure projects by approaching appropriate clients, being in contact with relevant consultants, by offering additional services for making the fees attractive, by participating in such competitions. An executed project generates better competence in a field, then handling of several diverse projects. Core competence leads the design organization into specific jobs, by way of excelling in results, efficiency of work procedure or job handling, efficiencies of input-benefit ratio, and client satisfaction. The repetition of opportunities leads to learning, experimentation and satisfaction. Core competence is perceived as an innovative pursuit that can cause enough synergies, to make the organization behave like self correcting, or continuously adjusting biological entities.

I have been asked by a lot of friends, family, relatives and acquaintances that why I shifted from academia to Corporate Job and that to into Marketing, sales and Business Development in BioPharma Domain post my PhD, considering the usual link between the latter and an academic path doesn't co-relates. For the curious minds, here's my take. Education serves a diverse purpose, fostering the growth of adaptable skills relevant across multiple domains 🚀🔬. In the professional sphere, numerous engineers smoothly shift into managerial and executive positions, while well-prepared scientists are equally capable of thriving in high-level industry roles. Similarly if and when given an opportunity to a Researcher to transition into corporate role, hands-down they are performing exceptionally well and are contributing to high growth and efficiency of the organization. The intense education in an elite PhD program is like an intellectual crucible. Right from the start, you engage in independent problem-solving, bearing the full responsibility of your project and ability to pivot if things go hay-wire. A research aptitude person can think more creatively and always plans for plan B and C if Plan A fails. This instills essential traits such as accountability, risk management, resource optimization/utilization and a proactive mindset, highly valued in the Corporate environment & Biotech-Pharma industry. 💡 Yet, the most valued attributes developed in PhD journey is resilience and endurance 🌟🕰️. Recognizing that your hypotheses may fail about 99 percent of the time but finding the resolve to wake up each day with renewed motivation and eagerness to explore new paths is a lesson learned over the course of 4-5 demanding years. The patience, persistence and perseverance that is instilled with a PhD degree can be easily channeled into Sales, Marketing and operations with a high success ratio. I strongly advocate for the Biopharma industry to shift its perspective and hire trained scientists and researchers for roles that match these crucial soft skills. Do not make the unusual usual! Having a full time job is usual, and its not a bad thing to be an employee! Continuing your master’s degree became usual and continuing PHD is unusual, but its not bad as it depends on your career goals and your character! Do not fall into the trap of 5 minutes talk and take words out of context from most businessmen/women today; listen to their full story and see also doctors stories, engineers, builders in different industries like pharmaceutical and technology! Learn from different cultures and countries as well

Industry expertise. So what? This is my third post talking about why I exist & solutions I provide. I have covered Consistency, Speed and Cost. Let’s cover sector knowledge. In 1997 I studied for a degree in Environmental Science, essentially an amalgamation of sciences including Chemistry, Biology & Ecology with a bit of Geography mixed in. That led me into a science-based lab role, then into lab sales, then into life science executive search and in-house TA roles. Whilst not part of some clever plan, I have worked WITHIN several life science and PE firms. Working for the industry you recruit for has been hugely beneficial for me. By osmosis, you can’t help but learn about products and how they get from R&D, through Manufacturing & Supply Chain into the Commercial Sales & Marketing organisation. Along the way you appreciate the enabling functions of finance, HR, legal, RA/QA & Procurement. In PE, understanding the pressures of deal flow, pre-deal activities, investment committees, exit horizons and how much getting the exec team right matters. Being around the sector all day everyday just gives you an innate ability to know what type of person will work in a given organisation. A VC backed healthcare company with a consumable and consumer led product is likely to need a different leader to a FTSE 100 B2B capital equipment product, for example. Knowing when healthcare experience matters and when it doesn’t is important. Companies often ask for hires to be credible in front of a surgeon, doctor, clinician or MHRA/FDA. Here are some common industry/sector buzz words that are often mentioned to me: CQC DoH ICB’s IC IM Portco IEC 62304 HCTED Pushing back and knowing when that is not needed is a skill. I’m very British when it comes to talking about “industry expertise”, but I feel a lot more confident having sat in, on and around the sector in various guises. It’s also the sector I enjoy which in turn leads you to operate at your best. I rummaged around in my desk and found a collection of memorabilia from various companies I have worked with! What have you kept from previous organisations?

𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭 ↳ Actually DOING science (aka research) ↳ Deep technical knowledge of a specific area ↳ Professional development is technically focused (your specific scientific area or adjacent disciplines) ↳ Minimal interpersonal skills, EQ (emotional intelligence) required* ↳ Rejection and difficulty comes from scientific challenges 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 ↳ Only LEARNING about science (understanding products and services) ↳ Shallow technical knowledge across multiple areas ↳ Professional development is business focused (sales/BD courses, and an MBA may be in your future) ↳ Highly developed interpersonal skills, EQ required** ↳ Rejection and difficulty comes from other people These are just a few things to consider, and making a career shift is a big decision. Time has flown since the last update, and after the end of my trial period, it would have been great to do one more update. Unfortunately, the wonders of the sales world captivated my full focus, so let’s make this update belatedly. 😎 In the fall of 2023, I stepped into my first product manager role at #MediqSuomiOy with excitement. Before this, I had both built my career in various laboratory positions, and gained experience in customer service and sales. The leap into the unknown was nerve-wracking, but an incredibly welcome challenge that I had dreamt of for years! 🤩 Thanks to the fantastic work environment and team, I’ve learned a lot about the business world, received incredible support during challenging times, and joined one of the most skilled professional communities. In the field of special chemistry and hematology, I’ve learned a great deal from competent suppliers, and perhaps the most familiar name is #SEBIA and their electrophoresis equipment. ⚡ The opportunity and honor to work with top experts in laboratories to improve diagnostics in Finland have been an amazing experience, and every day ends with the question: How can I surpass myself tomorrow and bring best value to my customers?💪 During the early days of my career, four things have become ingrained in my mind, even though they were already etched into the gray noodle network inside my skull: 1. Organization and Preparation 📅 📓: This area was familiar from my educational background and previous workplaces, but its significance became even clearer as a product manager. I hope that basic education encourages this with proper techniques and exploration. Creating a dynamic plan for the long term is often essential for operational efficiency and mental well-being, so the effort is worthwhile. Continuous Learning 👓 🔍 : I’ve always been eager to learn and enjoy cognitive challenges, but this has become even more ingrained in a rapidly changing environment. New products, new approaches, new customers – continuous adaptation and self-improvement as a product manager. Learning is fun, and there are plenty of opportunities for it! 3. Sharing Experiences 🤝 😄 : Sharing knowledge and experiences with a great team is valuable. You can gain insights and develop through your own cases. Peer support in different situations is the most enriching form of support! 4. Managing Leisure Time 👾 📚 : I’ve noticed that when I do what I enjoy, the boundary between work and leisure becomes blurred. Setting boundaries in this regard is crucial for mental well-being, even though flexibility is essential. Taking time for yourself to recharge is important despite everything.
