1. Grounding Issues: A frequent culprit behind many malfunctions, grounding problems can be elusive. A ‘bad’ ground doesn’t have a straightforward definition. It might be something as subtle as a loosely connected ring terminal that only malfunctions when engine vibrations occur, or it could stem from an entirely different system creating interference through the ground connection. Ensure that all connections are securely fastened. For troubleshooting, try connecting suspect devices directly to the battery’s negative terminal, bypassing ground bars and chassis, to isolate the issue.
2. Connector Contact Problems: Inadequate contact within connectors can lead to numerous issues. Examine all pins and sockets to ensure they are not recessed within the connector shell and are securely locked in place. This check prevents them from being dislodged by the mating connector. Additionally, verify the integrity of all crimps on contacts and splices to ensure reliable connections.
3. CAN Bus Connectivity Issues: Correct configuration of the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus is crucial. Adhere to the standard of one twist per inch in the wiring – this specification is vital for proper functioning. Typically, the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low should be around 60 ohms, although readings between 40 and 120 ohms can be acceptable in certain situations. Ensure that each device is correctly connected with CAN High and CAN Low in the appropriate pins. Remember, a single misplaced wire can disrupt the entire network.
