"Transitioning" vets seeking HR post-military... You think you are leaving acronyms behind once you get that DD-214? Awwww heck naw you ain't! You see...you'll get PLENTY out here that you'll have to learn. So as I start highlighting some start employees...we'll make it a transitional learning point as well! Pictured: ME and Joe Maples! A former Mizzou football player, a foot and a half taller than me, and seriously the NICEST man I've ever met. Just honest to goodness salt-of-the-earth good dude. He is one of our SMED Technicians. That acronym? SMED=(per Wikipedia) Single-minute digit exchange of die is one of the many lean production methods for reducing inefficiencies in a manufacturing process. It provides a rapid and efficient way of converting a manufacturing process from running the current product to running the next product. In other words, changing the machinery from making one product to making another product. The more efficiently you do this, less down time you have thus increasing (hypothetically) production time. Joe does this as part of our team here at Bocar US. And when you are talking about swapping out large die cast systems for aluminum auto parts casting...it's NO JOKE. And he's awesome as a technician AND as a teammate. It's hard, can be dangerous (that's why we have strict work instructions), and often pretty hot. It's a foundry after all. Gonna be hot by default. Maples ALWAYS makes me smile. Be like Maples. **************** Back to acronyms. Some acronyms we use specific to HR here include... STD/LTD FMLA FLSA WC ADA PPM PM AD&D COLA FSA/HSA EEO OSHA EBT EBIT EOB JD LOA Etc. You can run, but you can't hide from acronyms. Just learn them on the fly and don't be afraid to ask what I ask EVERY SINGLE DAY: "WHAT IN THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN?"
