🔬 Exciting News! Thrilled to share that my first research paper as a first author has been published today on Bentham Science, under their journal "Current Diabetes Reviews". 📚 In this work, me and my colleagues have explored the control systems behind diabetes, diabetic complication, with a special focus on diabetic neuropathy. We tried to revolutionise the way we understand diseases' onset and progression by concentrating on the adaptive biological cascades that the nervous system puts in place to preserve its homeostasis in the face of a diabetic assault. In a meticulous analysis, researchers explored the mechanisms triggering prediabetes resolution through weight loss. Insightful Findings on Thyroid Dysfunction & COVID-19 🦠 Recent research has unveiled critical insights into how COVID-19 impacts thyroid function: 1)COVID Genome & ACE2 Expression: The interaction between the COVID-19 genome and ACE2 expression in the thyroid underscores the virus's direct impact on thyroid health. 2) Prevalence: A significant finding is the 15% prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among COVID-19 patients, highlighting the need for awareness among healthcare providers. 3) Post-COVID Surveillance: For COVID-19 survivors treated with IFNß1b, thyroid function surveillance is recommended, pointing towards tailored post-recovery care. Nice article, which is giving food for thinking about diabetes and the future prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes. Machine learning may identify the different subgroups, but much still to learn about how to prevent and treat.

Not all research is created equal. Some research studies are more careful and convincing than others. The research Azoki is sharing in this social media series is what we believe to be extremely high quality and/or especially impactful for practice. Today, we excerpt conclusions emerging from a high-level ‘study of studies’ published in the prestigious journal, The Lancet - Diabetes & Endocrinology. The authors review the research on endocrine-disrupting chemicals and their impact on human health. They write:  Evidence is particularly strong for relations between perfluoroalkyl substances and child and adult obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, gestational diabetes, reduced birthweight, reduced semen quality, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and breast cancer. Professor Stephen Atkin, Head of the School of Postgraduate Studies & Research, and Professor Alexandra Butler, Professor in Pathology at RCSI Bahrain, recently published a study titled: "Oxidative Stress Markers and Heat Shock Proteins in Non-Obese Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Are Not Elevated and Show No Correlation with Vitamin D." Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is known to be associated with long-term health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. This is primarily because most PCOS patients are overweight and exhibit chronic inflammation and cardiovascular risk markers in their blood tests, which can negatively impact their well-being. The findings of this study reveal that non-obese PCOS patients do not show blood markers indicative of cardiovascular risk. Tackling heterogeneity in diabetes and obesity are major challenges. We discuss these topics as part of our precision medicine series just out in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. Five key take-homes: 1.      Diabetes and obesity are complex disorders, each with wildly varying aetiologies, clinical manifestations, treatment requirements and prognoses. 2.      Current one-size-fits-all diagnostic, prevention and treatment approaches do not adequately address disease heterogeneity. 3.      Precision medicine seeks to leverage disease heterogeneity to improve the impact of prevention and treatment approaches. 4.      Diabetes is a condition of chronically elevated blood glucose. About 98% of the burden of diabetes is classified as ‘type 2 diabetes’. The diagnosis is often reached when the other, much rarer forms of diabetes have been excluded as an explanation for the patient’s hyperglycaemia. Type 2 diabetes is, therefore, a diagnosis of exclusion; it is a non-specific/imprecise diagnosis. 5.      New research, often using machine learning methods applied to clinical phenotype or genetic data, shows that obesity and diabetes can be subclassified into more precise subtypes.
