Today, over 117.3 million people are displaced worldwide. Among them, millions of individuals are denied basic rights such as education and healthcare. One of the most pressing challenges refugees face is language exclusion. Without the ability to understand or be understood, people struggle to access essential services and information, secure employment, and integrate into new communities. Language barriers can lead to misinformation, misunderstanding, and a profound sense of isolation, amplifying the trauma of displacement. At CLEAR Global, we advocate for inclusive language solutions that ensure people's right to receive vital information and be heard. Throughout this week, we will share stories from our community and highlight some of our projects that support refugees through language inclusion. “‘Everyone has right to access information and services regardless of their ability to speak English,’ Nam says. ‘Language access can be a life-and-death issue,’ she continues. ‘For example, many refugee and immigrant workers and small-business owners could not access unemployment benefits and other government assistance programs during the COVID-19 pandemic because information was available only in English and applicants were required to fill out applications in English.’ More broadly, Nam’s scholarly work focuses on poverty and economic inequality, particularly how policies and programs can help disadvantaged populations build assets. In one project, she collaborated with Journey’s End Refugee Services to study barriers and facilitators to economic success for local immigrants and refugees. When the boys and girls who do not practise the religion class become a disturbance for the school, the school headmaster decides to assign them to a music teacher for the end-of-year concert. This is the series "L'ora di alternativa", the new format produced by WeWorld - an organisation committed for 50 years to guaranteeing the rights of women, girls and children in 27 countries around the world - under the direction of Koala Production, the Rome-based independent production company of Ali, Mouadh and Takoua Ben Mohamed. THE SHAPE PROJECT The series "The Alternative Hour" was created in the framework of the SHAPE project (SHaring Actions for the Participation and Empowerment of migrant communities and Local Authorities), which responds to the European call for proposals AMIF (Transnational Actions on Asylum, Migration and Integration) aimed at promoting the participation of migrant communities and people from a migrant background in democratic processes and in the design and implementation of integration policies. The project sees the participation as partners of: Municipalities of Lousada and Stuttgart; ALDA (international network); 5 NGOs: WeWorld, Fondation Artmisszio (Hungary), RightChallenge (Portugal), Jesuit Refugee Service (Croatia), LAKA (Germany); the association CONNGI - Coordinamento Nazionale Nuove Generazioni Italiane. #ShapeTheSocietyWeWant

Two months since Dr Muhammed Abdul Khalid criticised Malaysia's policy and nothing has changed. Refugees and stateless children remain excluded from formal education in public schools, crippling them from reaching their full potential. Malaysian law also bars registered refugees from accessing formal employment, forcing them to seek alternative forms of employment which exposes them to abuse and exploitation. Dr. MAK's criticisms are not new. The rally for refugees, Palestinians included, stands steadfast decades in. Some thoughts: 1. What is the purpose of hosting refugees when the are not allowed to work or study? 2. When will Malaysia sign up to the UN 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 protocol, to obtain a legal/administrative framework for dealing with refugees? 3. When will Malaysia ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination? 4. The 2018 Government pledged to ratify the international refugee convention to allow refugees to work in the country. They did not do it. When will the new Government see this through? When governments do not show any signs of relenting, how then can they condemn the elitists who are waging war against the innocent, disregarding Palestinians?
