While it acknowledges the importance of a human touch in translation, it conveniently overlooks the harsh reality that AI integration often serves as a pretext for driving down rates paid to translators. In many cases, large Language Service Providers outsource the bulk of their work to freelancers. By leveraging AI, these LSPs try to justify offering lower rates to translators under the guise of increased efficiency and productivity. The debate around AI in the localization industry is not just about technology; it's about preserving the heart and soul of translation, particularly for creative, dialogue-driven content like video games, movies and books. AI should be utilized as merely a tool, an advanced dictionary if you will, to complement human expertise. While these tools can assist translators, they should enhance human expertise, not replace it. Imagine advertising a dictionary as the ultimate solution for reaching global audiences — you'd be laughed at! Then why do we advertise AI as amall-in-one solution? AI should be a valuable resource used by skilled professionals, not the ultimate product sold to customers. Using Machine Translation (MT) for creative purposes (video games localization or movie translations) is a bad idea. It strips creative content of its essence, making translations bland and uninspiring. It fails to capture cultural or contextual cues, similar to how AI-generated art often feels lifeless. Additionally, using MT ignores the increased burden on human reviewers to correct AI’s errors. This review process is tedious, thankless, and devalues the expertise of skilled translators. But, instead of being paid more for a more thankless task, LSPs use AI as a pretense to drive down rates. This shortsighted approach risks driving out the most qualified and experienced freelancers and small boutique agencies from the market. As rates plummet due to aggressive cost reductions, talented professionals are forced to seek alternative means of employment, ultimately compromising the long-term quality and professionalism of translations. Using AI as a cost-saving tool without regard for the expertise and livelihoods of translators undermines the integrity of the translation industry. Rather than fostering a race to the bottom in terms of pricing, LSPs should prioritize fair compensation for translators to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality translations.

I think we have a long way to go in terms of understanding the longer term implications of generative AI for global linguistic diversity. We need to keep developing practical frameworks like the one in the paper below, through discourse between technologists, underrepresented communities, and technical experts in language use and ecology. And frankly, we need more skeptical pragmatists. Talk on the intersection of AI and diversity seems to have a lack of consideration for a fact that most linguists would see as fairly obvious: diversity and inclusion can be at odds with each other. Languages create and are created by communities, which are interactional spheres. When communities split, by geographic dislocation, political disintegration, or through internal complexification and the creation of sub-communities, it is that separation combined with the immutable nature of linguistic/cultural change and development that produces new varieties of language. It is separation that produces and maintains diversity. The primary driver of the loss of linguistic diversity prior to the development of the postwar global economic system, after explicit genocide, was overt forced assimilationist language policy. The primary driver in the modern era is the flattening and consolidation of cultural communities and language ecologies through the growth of the globalized economy. In both cases, the threats to humanity's linguistic diversity is a product of a kind of inclusion. While it is easy for us to see how overt forced assimilationist policies don't align with our postwar conception of human rights -- how that's not the kind of inclusion we mean -- it seems to be less obvious that economic inclusion can be equally detrimental to linguistic diversity, even though that's kind of the argument that language endangerment researchers have been making for decades. We value economic inclusion because a lot of the historical evils we want to avoid repeating are based in economic exclusion. And yet we know, regardless of whatever ills that exclusion might produce, we know that exclusion or separation does drive cultural and linguistic diversity. But usually when we talk about the importance of inclusion, we are talking about inclusion of diverse individuals into institutions within the dominant culture. Institutions define spheres of interaction, and are inherently norm-generating. Supporting internal diversity of institutions is a stop-gap for their natural tendency to produce cultural conformity. If it feels icky to say that exclusion produces diversity, try replacing exclusion with sovereignty. Cultural sovereignty. Economic sovereignty. If we want to support linguistic diversity, we do that by finding ways to support sovereignty within new techno-economic paradigms. Sovereignty is the ability for communities to stand apart and persist on a different path. I don't see nearly enough of that discussion in the current wave of thinking on AI implications.

But what about other languages? In this clip, Maxime Waite, Microsoft's Director of Technology Strategy and a leader in GenAI, sheds light on an essential truth: “Everything in the world has bias in it; we are never going to escape bias. “ “When it comes to lesser-represented languages, such as some West African languages, for example, the quality of AI solutions quickly diminishes.” This isn't just a gap; it's a reflection of bias inherent in the datasets these models are built on. 💡 It made me think: “Isn’t this an invaluable opportunity for the localization industry?” Not only do we sit on vast amounts of data across a variety of languages, we also hold a lot of technical expertise on how to implement multilingual programs.
