In recent weeks, Kenya has witnessed an explosion of civic tech. As Gen Z took to the streets to protest the Kenya Finance Bill 2024, a digital movement sprang up to educate Kenyans through bite-sized explainer videos on TikTok, X, Instagram, and WhatsApp—spanning over 10 local languages. Simultaneously, an LLM for the Finance Bill was released in English and Kiswahili. This surge underscores the urgent need for an inclusive AI ecosystem in Africa. African languages remain underrepresented in AI, reflecting a wider challenge.  Creating and expanding language datasets is pivotal. With over 2,000 languages across the continent, efficient data creation pathways are crucial. A Global Language Readiness Index could prioritize data collection, sparking innovation in language tools and applications. I've been getting more and more interested in how #generativeAI can be used for humanitarian analytics and situation awareness. Check out this paper I published in the recent ISCRAM 2024 conference where you can see outcomes of my Fulbright Poland work on using #LLMs to understand situation awareness related to #Ukrainian #refugees in #Poland. #chatGPT #datascience #spatialdatascience Title, abstract, and link to download the paper below. ------- Forced Displacement Situation Awareness with Large Language Models: Ukrainian Refugees in Poland Case Study We evaluated the utility of the large language model (LLM) ChatGPT to develop situation awareness related to the forced displacement of Ukrainian refugees into Poland. Utilizing text messages derived from the Help for Ukrainians in Poland Telegram message group, we used ChatGPT to translate messages in multiple languages into English and identify message topics and themes. Topics and themes from beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2022 were analyzed and visualized using K-means clustering and word clouds. The language identification and translation capabilities of the LLM were evaluated by two human evaluators and measured using Kappa (0.86) and BLUE scores (0.46) with the LLM performing effectively. We conclude that the ability of LLM using carefully developed language prompts for large data volume analysis with no need for manual human analysis shows promise for humanitarian analytics focused on rapidly identifying potential key trends, needs, and locations of displaced people. https://lnkd.in/dqbt24t2

Breaking Barriers: Would you prefer AI solutions in Nigerian indigenous languages? Walking into the InnovateAI Lagos Conference 2024, (AI In Nigeria) I could sense the excitement. The room was packed with AI professionals, each sharing their unique stories about Artificial Intelligence. Keynote speakers presenters and panelist like ★ Rodger Werkhoven from Open AI, Raghu Bala from MIT, Femi Osinubi from PWC Nigeria, Ife Durosinmi-Etti, MBA, Ashley Immanuel, Osita Oparaugo, Esq. , Suleiman Isah, Olumide Soyombo, and other experienced professionals added richness to the event. It felt like we were all getting ready to build a future where AI isn’t just a tool but something that can really make a positive difference. The speaker’s words hit home, making me see AI in a whole new light. Imagine if we could develop AI solutions and pre-train them in local languages like Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and other Nigerian languages, breaking down language barriers and making technical skills more accessible to everyone, promoting inclusivity.
