Did you know that women make up just 6.4% of the global aviation industry? This statistic reflects the incredible journey we still have to ensure gender diversity and inclusion within the sector. I am a proud member of Women in Aviation, a global organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests. Our mission is not just about celebrating achievements; it's about breaking down barriers and opening doors for future generations. My aviation journey was fueled by a childhood dream to become a fast jet pilot. Despite being told repeatedly by teachers that this wasn't a career for a young lady, my stubbornness pushed me to pass the entrance exams to become a pilot with the British military. However, due to personal medical reasons, I discovered that I couldn't pursue a career as a fighter pilot. At that point, the idea of becoming a commercial pilot seemed distant, as I had never encountered a female first officer or captain. To this day, I have yet to fly with a female colleague on the flight deck. It's an honour and a privilege to work for Padpilot, where 50% of our talented workforce are women. This is more than just a statistic; it's a statement of our commitment to change. At Padpilot, we're not just educating the next generation of pilots; we're helping to shape a more inclusive and diverse future for aviation, where anyone, regardless of their background, can achieve their dreams. Let's continue to support and inspire one another, and work towards a future where gender diversity in aviation is not an anomaly but a norm. #Padpilot #DiversityinAviation #InspiringTheNextGeneration #WomeninAviationDay2024

Today, a photo on my phone reminded me why I'm such a big advocate for DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity). 7 years ago today, my team won the first Airbus Defence and Space New Space Challenge. 🚀 During the competition kick-off event, it was pointed out that I was the only female and non-engineer taking part, but that didn't stop me. I knew my different background would give me diverse ways of thinking and carry me through to developing the correct solutions. 👩🏽💻 Not only did my team win, but I went on to win the UK Space Agency SatelLife competition on my own later that year. 🎊 𝐌𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞? As International Women's Day approaches (Friday 8th March) 👯♀️, I'm reminded how important it is to share stories like these, no matter how small it may feel. I always celebrate the day with activities to encourage other women & girls to breakdown stereotypes, and breakthrough into STEM (conferences, hackathons, keynotes, mentorship programs, etc). 🔭 👩🏽🔬 This year, I'm looking for like-minded individuals who want to work together and commemorate International Women's Day. Let's connect! #WomeninTech #WomeninSTEM #IWD2024

Words by Sebastian Kerridge, Talent Intelligence Lead at Strativ Group –/ Here at Strativ, we always strive to deliver diverse shortlists to our clients, and between April 2022 and April 2023, 24 per cent of our aerospace placements have been females; focused primarily on technical and engineering roles. This is a statistic we’re proud of as less than 10 per cent of the engineering workforce in the aerospace sector are female. In this article, we have highlighted four key opportunities that organisations can use to enhance gender diversity in their recruitment lifecycle. Partner with education to encourage participation In a recent report on women in Aviation / Aerospace (WIAA, 2022), it was highlighted that 46% of females become interested in the industry before they have left school. This outlines the huge potential for building a brighter future for women in aviation, but work needs to start early to lay the foundations. If organisations take action by inspiring early through partnering with educational institutions and providing events such as workshops, guest speakers, and competitions, introducing role models and mentors to younger demographics, the likelihood of achieving more females joining the industry can only move in a positive direction. In a recent “Female Influencers” podcast with Strativ Group a female leader in the eVTOL industry said, “having a mentor helped me understand myself better and the world around me better.” We need to ensure that role models and mentors are made visible and available to everyone and starting this during early education is likely to have the highest impact. In the same 2022 WIAA report it showed that beyond the role of flight attendants, female representation across all roles increased, on average, by less than 1% (0.95) between 2005 and 2020. “I have often found myself the only female in the room” said Stephanie Duffy, Director of Enterprise Technology Integration at Boeing. This only emphasises the challenges the industry is facing in creating a diverse workforce long-term and the lasting impact of having a male dominated industry with minimal signs of change on the horizon. Today is the last day for companies wishing to submit nominations for eVTOL Insights’ first ‘Women in eVTOL’ Special Report. Announced last month, the inaugural report will recognise and celebrate some of the amazing women working in the global Advanced Air Mobility market. A new edition will be published every year. The report will be similar to eVTOL Insights’ CTO Special Report published in June 2023. Both are smaller versions of the bigger Powerbook, which is now in its fourth year and will be published in January 2024. We’ve already received many incredible nominations, so if you’d like to put forward someone from your company, or even yourself, then please email a brief summary of why they/you should be included to [email protected] by the end of today, Friday, August 4th. From those with an engineering background, to those who have made significant contributions to the industry, we want to recognise women from a wide variety of roles every year going forward. There is also an opportunity for companies to sponsor our inaugural edition, which would include a full-page advertorial and branding, as well as exposure on our website and social media channels. If you’d like to find out more information, please email Doreen Pupillo, eVTOL Insights’ Head of Partnerships, at [email protected] #avfoilnews #aviation #aircraft #partnership #specialreport #evtol #vtol #electricvehicles #womanintech
