I started this March Madness squares pool to help supplement our fundraising for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This is run similarly to a Super Bowl pool in that each square will be assinged a winning score number and losing score number. Ex: Final score is 74-67, winning score number is 4, losing score umber is 7. Each square ($50) will then be your numbers for the entirety of the tournament and gets you a chance at winning in all 63 games. Payout will be as follows: First Round (32 games) = $25 Second Round (16 games) = $50 Sweet 16 (8 games) = $80 Elite 8 (4 games) = $125 Final Four (2 games) = $250 Championship = $500 Total payout = $3740. On Monday, I set off to do the Milford Track in the South Island of New Zealand with my mum and two sisters. It's a 5 day trek, a couple of days of 16km walking, and one day of 22kms. It's possibly the biggest challenge I have set for myself in years. 20 years ago, I was told I'd struggle to walk for the rest of my life. That I'd struggle with any weight increase, in particular when I'm pregnant. I was 21, obsessed with netball and touch football, playing for my Uni and socially as much as I could. But at University games, I had a bad clash and my knee twisted and collapsed. I was taken to emergency and told "ligament damage". 12 months later after no improvement, I was referred to an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr James O'Brien. He did an MRI where he found the end of my femur had snapped off and was partially dead. You see, I'd hurt my knee when I was 12 but it would have only been a hairline fracture back then and not detected on an xray. (Osteochondritis dissecans). Fast forward almost 10 years, and the bone had basically died, which is what snapped away at Uni games. There was only one thing that could "maybe" fix it, but it was in trial mode and not covered by Medicare therefore hugely expensive. He tried a couple of other things, like bolting the broken bone back on and hoping it reattached, it didn't. Failure, after failure, we finally did the trial. Basically, it included bone cell grafting, growing it in a lab, putting it back in, and wearing a locked leg brace for 12 months. But it was the last option.... And you know what? It worked. I could walk pain free for the first time since 12. Ever since then, I have been scared to really push or test my knee. I've had a few dance floor injuries which caused huge panic, but thankfully it was fine. But I'd never dream of doing a walk like this. So this is why this walk is not "just a walk" for me. Its so much more. I've had a few people offer to sponsor me, which is super lovely, but instead, please donate some funds to Parkinson's NSW instead. I'll also have no internet for 5 whole days. Not sure which is a bigger challenge!! Happy Thursday.

The National Cancer Strategy states that 90% of patients who receive radiotherapy should commence it within 15 days of being ready to treat. Last year only 6/10 patients began their radiotherapy treatment on time, compared to 8/10 people in 2018. Time and time again we have called on government to increase capacity and infrastructure to deliver the radiation therapy and care Irish patients deserve. More and more people are being diagnosed with cancer every year in Ireland. We need commitment from government to invest in long term solutions to meet future demand, including increasing radiation therapy university places.
