VBHC Implementations in Rare Diseases: Too Early to Implement? As the implementation of VBHC accelerates globally, rare diseases often seem to lag behind. However, this is not the case at the Beatrix Children's Hospital at UMCG, where they are applying VBHC principles to treat liver Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD). Thanks to the Dillon Quirke Foundation who are with us today in the Munster Technological University doing cardiac screening for 48 of our 12 - 18 year old's. This is such an important thing to do to keep our young safe while playing sport. A special shout out to Anthony O'Shea & Eimear Foley who have been fundamental in the organisation of this and Munster Technological University for letting us use their facilities. Cardiac screening can help identify underlying heart conditions that can lead to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). The Dillon Quirke Foundation is funding a comprehensive, doctor-led, cardiac screening service, with Advanced Medical Services (AMS) providing the screening.   AMS is Ireland’s leading mobile cardiac screening company. The company performs cardiac screening in schools and sports clubs nationwide, ultimately aimed at reducing the incidence of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). Approximately two young people (under 35) die each week in Ireland from SADS. [SM2] Research has shown that cardiac screening can significantly reduce the incidence of SADS by up to 89%.

Six months ago, a significant milestone was achieved in the realm of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) research. For the first time, CTE was identified in female professional athlete Heather Anderson. However, the journey is just beginning. The first mention of CTE in the literature (at the time referred to as Punch Drunk) dates back to 1928 in a cohort of boxers, with evidence emerging in 2005 of CTE in former professional American football players. Fast forward almost 18 years, and we're finally placing female brains on the map. Yet, the work is far from over, especially when it comes to understanding how CTE impacts female brains globally and in Canada. Until the last two decades, there were limited opportunities for female athletes in professional sports leagues, few in military roles, and a stigma surrounding intimate partner violence that hindered open discussion. As a result, we're faced with significant data gaps. To date, of the female athlete brains studied, there have only been two diagnosed with CTE. In my role as Director of Partnerships for CLFC, and as an athlete myself, I’ve seen firsthand the impact that inequitable research, outreach, and engagement, can have on community health outcomes. That's why I am proud to share that I have pledged my brain for CTE research. 💡 🧠 How Can We Equalize the Data on CTE? It starts with you! Consider pledging your brain to CTE research.
