In pavement markings, a broken line is formed of segments and gaps, usually in the ratio of one to three. In contrast, dotted lines (meant to provide guidance and mostly used for line extensions) have noticeably shorter segments.

It's important for (some) civil engineers to maintain and extend their knowledge of the theory and practice behind how roads are built. It's important to understand the geotechnical testing and properties that enable structural decisions to be made about the earthworks and placement design. It's probably also useful to learn abut the construction techniques, material properties and ways to minimise the impact on the environment, construction cost and maintenance too! There is loads to learn. But the more you learn the more you will be able to contribute to how engineering problems are solved and how to manage the delivery of those engineering solutions. Or to quote a colleague I was speaking to recently "just do engineering". This is what a professional can do. They can work independent as part of a team and contribute to the design (as contractors or consultants) in relation to the contract stage. But for those f you who want to go for chartership. For those who want to stretch their professional abilities that little bit further you will need to be proactive, take up opportunities and challenges. You will need to be able to not just implement a solution but to be able to evaluate its effectiveness. ie it's not just the right answer, but you will know why it is the right answer. This is #civilengineering and there is not a bending moment in sight!
