In a meta-analysis of 34 studies that evaluated children hospitalized for traumatic injury, treatment in pediatric trauma centers (PTC) was associated with lower mortality than in an adult trauma center (odds ratio 0.59). For seriously injured infants, children, and younger adolescents, these findings support treatment in a PTC. When a level 1 PTC is unavailable, these children should receive care at a hospital with the highest level of pediatric trauma expertise and resources.
