Pro-Tip: Get play scheduled on your calendar and it'll show up for you. With ease. That's my takeaway from rejoining my Summer Co-ed Adult softball team this season. It's my 15th with the team. I'm grateful to the Baja Bombers for so many years of fun and camaraderie on and off the field. As we age some of us are better than others at keeping play and fun a part of our day-to-day. Research shows that is it essential to our creativity and life fulfillment. (So why is it so hard for us doers to slow down and play?) And play can take many forms (so there should be no excuses, right?) For me, I’m better in the summer when softball games are on my team calendar. All I have to do is show up. And I try hard to negotiate my schedule around game times because they’re so much fun. But I find other seasons are lacking the same fun factor because I don’t have the commitment of a team. So I'm reflecting on my lessons of summer softball to see how I carry those results into the fall. How do you keep fun and play on your calendar and a part of every week?  Any other Pro Tips? 4 lessons I learned from being a baseball coach for the first time that made me a better person and professional. ⚖️1. Balance doesn’t happen on accident. Adding baseball games and practices into my already busy life meant I had to make intentional effort to say “no” to invitations a lot more often than I was used to. This was critical to maintaining warp-speed at work and being a good husband. This lesson in focus and intentionality has been helpful at TrellisPoint where we have so many opportunities for growth but we have to focus and make sure we are pushing goals all the way across the finish line. 👶2. Relating to younger people is hard but worth it. In my most recent two roles I have been one of the youngest, if not the youngest, on the staff so I’m used to relating to folks that are older than me. Relating to people that are 10+ years younger than me gave me a peek at what it’s like for my teammates to deal with me everyday and I feel bad for them now! 😂 jk (kinda) I also learned a lot about how today’s high schoolers think, talk and act. They are dealing with no shortage of challenges and spending time with them has helped me understand their plight. ☁️3. If you want to achieve your dreams, help someone else achieve theirs. Spending hours and hours in the pursuit of helping these dudes achieve their dreams has reminded me about the importance of lifting up people around me. In work and in life it’s not the ME show, I get so much joy from helping others reach their goals and I need to make sure this is a priority in all facets of my life. 🏋️♂️4. The work is the reward. While winning a state championship is a great goal, the important takeaway from a season or a career is the daily work. The trophy is what you strive towards but it’s critical to learn to enjoy and appreciate the grind. I watched a lot of players learn this lesson along side me this year and I’m confident it will serve us well. I’m blessed to have coached alongside some of the best coaches I could imagine learning from. One of those coaches happens to be my dad. Spending the season with him was a blast! I recently wrapped up coaching my boys varsity middle school basketball team at Scottsdale Christian Academy. I love that I have the opportunity to coach as it supports our school, allows me to develop stronger relationships with the boys on the team, and teach some valuable lessons… all while forcing me to be more intentional about my schedule! Here are a few things our team learned this season: *Be a good teammate; everyone makes mistakes, so lift up others on and off the court. *Be resilient; when you make a bad play on offense, turn around and get back to triple down on defense…the team got used to me yelling “get it back on defense”. *Teamwork; it takes all 5 players doing their job to the best of their ability, one weak link creates opportunities for the other team. *Get shots up; you can’t score if you never take shots…our goal was 50+ shots a game. Travel Baseball is like going to Disney World - You want to believe it makes your dreams come true - So you play along and pretend it will - But deep down, you're not sure So what do you do? 2/ Here's the problem - Majority of families don't get an honest assessment - They assume he can play at the highest level - Sign up for showcases, camps, travel ball - Spend thousands of dollars And end up frustrated. 3/ What about EXPOSURE? - Majority of travel baseball games don't have college coaches - College coaches are following the top travel teams - This is a VERY small percentage of teams Playing on a top travel team helps IF you play. 4/ This is what happens - A player commits to a D1 school - Someone thinks they are better than that player - They start wondering where their scholarship is - Everyone is scratching their heads and dumbfounded * Early commits are not the norm 5/ Frustration with early commits I hear this a lot from families: "We don't understand why "Jimmy" got an offer over Jeff. Jeff has a higher batting average." The best player and the best prospect aren't always the same player on a team. College coaches are projecting. 6/ College coaches want to WIN! Not every player develops at a young age If you're a late bloomer, you can still find a school How do I know? - Because college coaches are hired and fired on wins & losses - If you show you're better than someone else, they'll make room. 7/ Recruiting Timeline 14u and under - You don't need to attend showcases - You don't need to attend camps - You don't need to travel You don't NEED to. If you have the resources, do whatever you want! I'm putting this information out there because not everyone does. 8/ Recruiting Timeline 16u - Top high school players in the country are getting looks 16u - Mid Major D1 schools are recruiting 17u - D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO are looking At any point, you can make a massive jump and get on someone's radar. Summary 1. Travel baseball is a tool that can help 2. Don't feel pressured to do it if you're not ready 3. People who know me well are aware that I have a passion for Fastpitch Softball. I am currently a Level 4 Badged New Zealand Umpire and on the Board of North Harbour Softball Association. I was recently elected Chair of the Board due to the previous Chair stepping down. I have always been of the belief that if there is a need or a gap where I have the skills, time, and capacity, I will put my hand up to help. That’s why I am on the Glenfield Primary School Board, a Softball umpire, and on the NHSA Board. I am really excited about the direction of North Harbour Softball, and what we are trying to provide to our athletes, supporters and families going forward. One of our big initiatives is the development of a set of batting cages. These batting cages will provide crucial training opportunities across all our age groups, it will allow our North Harbour Representatives to train without having to Howick (the nearest commercial batting cages) and will hopefully generate a small ongoing cashflow from the rental to players and teams across our clubs. It also creates a dry training space to conduct other trainings (eg catcher / pitcher, fitness, mental skills, umpire plate mechanics and so on). To fund the development of the cages we are looking for corporates, groups, and people to become sponsors (or donors). At North Harbour Softball, you will have exposure to: ·        689 Junior players (and growing year on year) ·        586 Senior players (and growing year on year) ·        Umpires / Scorers / Coaches / Managers ·        Along with the above, there are all the supporters and families that come out to the park during the week to watch games, attend trainings and to be actively involved around the park. There will also be exposure during winter to people attending Albany Football United games and trainings. North Harbour is also hosting the Softball New Zealand Women’s Open championship this season (14 women’s teams attended the 23/24 competition from around New Zealand) and the Men’s Open Championship in 24/25 (20 teams attended the 23/24 competition). Attached are schematics of how the cages will look and where they will be located, and our initial sponsorship proposal (we have evolved the cages since then).
