Great article today in Bloomberg that sheds light on a startling reality for most communities working to integrate more parks and open spaces into their plans. The benefits of flood mitigation, improved air quality, recreation opportunities and community beautification run up against the harsh realities of shifting construction costs and maintenance needs. Perhaps its time to stop thinking of creating parks in such traditional terms, and start rethinking community programming that maximizes the spaces (and connections between spaces) we already have?

An interesting article that provides another clear example and answer to those who say their communities can't afford high quality public places for pedestrians or cyclists because of "more important priorities". Without fail, when community decision makers recognize that great environments for people should be an integral part of every public work and project program, their cities and towns become more vibrant social and economic centers of sustainability at every level. Small successes lead to larger successes, and eventually a desirable human-scale development pattern is formed that becomes a key driver of social and economic health and well-being for residents and visitors alike.

🌳 FACT: The only reason municipal parks would ever need to be low budget is because the budget is overspent on other things that don’t actually improve people’s health and well-being. 🌳 For example, City of Chicago 2024 budget is up for approval, and Mayor Johnson has increased the budget for Chicago Police Department, who already gets more than $4 million a DAY. 🌳 ONE DAY of City of Chicago Public Safety spending could fund DOZENS of parks for children and families to play and safely be together. 🌳 In Chicago, it’s actually about the City’s spending priorities, and not about building cheaper parks. Our communities need money for public green spaces more than Chicago Police Department needs $1.94 billion each year. And that’s a fact.
Entire communities benefit from parks, but finding funding for new green space can be difficult. “It’s a layered challenge, because park systems have been chronically underfunded,” says Bianca Clarke, director of TPL’s 10-Minute Walk Program. But Trust for Public Land is reimagining underutilized spaces, leveraging federal funding, and working with communities to maximize local resources to put parks where they’re needed most. Todays top tip (again I might be the last to find out about this!). If you need to have a quick look at land ownership boundaries you can use this site https://lnkd.in/erVsgbSe, and then use the codes to purchase titles and plans. This can be a handy starting point when trying to work out land ownership / tenantship on larger scale river restoration and habitat enhancment schemes.
