Health starts at home. Community Health Improvement Week is about shining a spotlight on disparities that exist within a community and showing dedication to raising awareness and promoting efforts aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of its citizens. A community that supports itself is more capable of overcoming challenges; building stronger, more cohesive social networks; and creating supportive environments where people can rely on each other in times of need. If you aren't already: VOLUNTEER. As someone who makes it a focal point to support those around me, I cannot stress enough the importance of getting involved, face-to-face with those who you are serving. Volunteering in healthcare settings, such as clinics or hospitals, provides firsthand experience in patient care and health education, fostering empathy, a better understanding of challenges that individuals are facing, and personal growth. So, how can you focus on creating a healthier, happier community, not just this week, but every day? ➡️ Help organize and conduct health screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and other common health issues. ➡️ Assist in setting up and managing local vaccination clinics, providing logistical support, and educating the community about the importance of immunizations. ➡️ Participate in or organize campaigns and petitions to raise awareness about specific health issues and push for change within your community. Giving back to the community is essential for collective growth, especially in the realm of health. CHI Week provides an excellent opportunity for people to come together, share resources, and work towards a healthier future. #CommunityHealthImprovementWeek #CHIWeek #CommunityHealth #GivingBack

Missed Opportunity: This Vital Health Option Was Absent at the Resource Fair – Can You Guess What It Was? Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in my local community resource fair. It was an incredible experience to connect with dedicated professionals like social workers, nurses, and community health representatives. The fair showcased various essential services – from pediatric and cancer screenings to trauma support. Organizations like Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County, Walmart, UNT Health Science Center, Cook Children's Health Care System, Texas Health Resources, Tarrant Area Food Bank, JPS Health Network were all represented, offering valuable resources. Yet, among this impressive array of services, one glaring omission was 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀. Clinical trials allow researchers to test new treatments that can improve health outcomes for everyone. Diverse participation in these trials is crucial to ensure that new treatments are effective for all populations. ✅We can significantly increase awareness and participation by building community partnerships. Let's bridge the healthcare gap and ensure everyone can access ALL their health options. Clinical trials offer a chance to contribute to medical breakthroughs while receiving potential health benefits. As National Public Health Week comes to a close, let's reflect on the incredible strides made in safeguarding our communities and fostering well-being. This year's theme, "Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health," has guided our focus on key areas vital to our collective community health. From fostering civic engagement to addressing the impacts of climate change, each day has been a testament to our commitment to public health. 👥 On Monday, we emphasized the power of Civic Engagement, recognizing that when individuals come together, they can effect positive change in health outcomes for all. 🏡 Tuesday highlighted the importance of Healthy Neighborhoods, where access to healthcare, nutritious food, and safe environments are fundamental to thriving communities. 🌍 Wednesday, we addressed Climate Change, acknowledging its significant impact on public health and the urgency of collective action. 🛠️ Thursday showcased New Tools and Innovations, demonstrating how technology and creative solutions are revolutionizing public health interventions. 🍎 Today we focus on Reproductive and Sexual Health, promoting comprehensive care and education for individuals of all backgrounds. 🚨 Saturday will underscore Emergency Preparedness, reminding us of the importance of readiness and resilience in the face of unforeseen challenges. And as we look to the Future of Public Health on Sunday, we envision a world where equity, accessibility, and innovation are at the forefront of our efforts. Let's extend our deepest gratitude to the dedicated public health professionals who work tirelessly to ensure the well-being of our communities. National Public Health Week Some ideas & tips from the American Public Health Association to show your support for Public Heath this week. These are just a few suggestions you can do as individual or ways students can participate in National Public Health Week.  Tuesday: Promote Healthy Neighborhoods By Planting Trees, Start a Community Walking group, Donate healthy fresh foods to your local food bank in your community.  Wednesday: Climate Change. Buy less, Become a Climate for Health Ambassador. The Climate for Health Ambassadors training is a free online training designed to build your climate and health knowledge. You can learn how to communicate and encourage action on climate, health and equity. Track and Improve your heath through wearable health technology. Stay updated on vaccinations. Use Telehealth services.  Friday: Reproductive & Sexual Health Donate feminine hygiene products to local shelters. See a health provider for screenings & testing.  Saturday: Emergency Preparedness. Build emergency kit and contact list. Make a emergency preparedness plan with family & friends. Review plan and emergency kit with kids. Replace smoke detectors and provide fire extinguishers for elderly and those with disabilities. Make sure there is one in every room.  Sunday: Future of Public Health.Join and volunteer at community organizations. Educate and advocate for others to improve communities for everyone. 

From what to wear to what we eat, we make on average between 33,000 to 35,000 decisions a day. While some decisions may be inconsequential to people's lives (i.e. what TV show to watch tonight) many of them force our families to choose between basic necessities, including food, shelter, medical attention, and clothing. Thanks again to Maranda C. Ward, Ed.D, MPH for introducing me to National Public Health Week. As previously mentioned in my last post, National Public Health week is every first full week of April and is intended to recognize contributions made to Public Health as well as bringing attention to issues that can improve our nation's health. Each day of National Public Health Week focuses on a specific theme, with today being healthy neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods and living situations have a tremendous impact on our health and wellbeing. A healthy neighborhood is key for a healthy life. Healthy neighborhoods are categorized as having a safe place to live without the dangers of pollution or hazards. In addition, it means to have places in the community where people can be active such as having parks, sidewalks, and bike trails/lanes. Furthermore, access to nutritious and affordable food plays a role in creating a healthy neighborhood. Some ways that you can contribute to creating healthy neighborhoods are: Planting trees: Consider planting trees in your yard or joining a local organization dedicated to tree planting. Trees have various benefits such as protection from rising heat, reducing pollution, improving mental health, and enhancing neighborhood aesthetics Build relationships with your neighbors: Neighborly connections build a sense of belonging, social support, and create supportive environments By taking these actions, we can all play a part in creating healthier, more vibrant neighborhoods for ourselves and future generations. #NationalPublicHealthWeek #HealthyNeighborhoods
