Since 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has consistently stated that electricity produced from various sources of waste methane qualifies for credits under the RFS program, and Congress has reinforced that and even appropriated funds for the EPA to begin issuing those credits. In fact, Congress recently directed the EPA to provide a briefing on planned actions for the eRIN pathway. If the EPA takes the step to finalize its proposed ground rules for producing these credits, it would produce a climate win-win: decreases both in landfill waste methane emissions and in greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector due to reduced use of gasoline and diesel.
