Alright everyone, welcome to a Truck Safe Network webinar, the 4th in our seven part series on improving CSA scores. Today's topic, which again is the crash indicator basic. This is a basic that is measuring your performance relative to your peers in the area of dot recordable crashes. How many crashes are you incurring and and how does that compare to your peer group? That is essentially what the crash indicator. Basic is scoring you in. And so it's a little different in that regard from many of the other basics that we're talking about in this series. It's not so much about it. It's not at all about roadside inspections or violations discovered in those inspections. This is just about crashes. As you would as you would suspect given its name, your crash indicator measure score is influenced mainly by the time and severity weights of your crashes and then also your average power unit count and this utilization. Spectrum, so that ends up calculating your your measure score on a month to month basis and then like I said, that is plotted out on a percentile scale, measuring you against your peers in that category. And that's how you end up with your your CSA score and the crash indicator basic when we're talking about the different types of crashes that go into. What is considered a recordable or reportable crash? There's there's three things that you have to look at and Brandon touched on those. One would be a fatality no matter who is involved. If there's a fatality that is considered a dot reportable. The other, The next one would be bodily injury to a person who as a result of the injury had to be taken away from the scene for treatment. Now that gets. A little sketchy is OK, Did the person actually receive treatment away? And I think that comes more into play if there's a lawsuit involved. That way you have the those records to be discoverable and you can find out. And then if there was really no treatment given, umm, then that is something that's challengeable. The the last one is one or more of the vehicles incurring disabling damage. That's a key. That's a key phrase when it comes to. Things that are towed as a result of the accident requiring. One or both of the motor vehicles or any of the motor vehicles to be transported away by away from the scene by a tow truck or other motor vehicle. One thing we don't really have a slide for, but it's important to know that one way that you improve your crash indicator score. Probably the the best chance you have at improving your crash indicator score is challenging accidents that get put on your account that aren't dot recordable to begin with. That happens pretty frequently for whatever reason the state. Reports it as a recordable crash and then it ends up weighing on your score. But then you you look into it and it turns out that it didn't fit into one of these three categories. And So what you can file what's called a data queues appeal in those cases and challenge that the accident wasn't a recordable accident. It's important to understand that. Unless they're on a gated lot where the public does not have access to. Then you still could have a dot reportable crash in that situation, crash preventability determination program. And I think it's one of the things I wanted to mention First off, we do a lot of these, so for different carriers. And one of the things that I wanted to point out where the statistics for this and they put these out by the quarter. So when I checked them last, then I haven't checked them in maybe a month. I think it's something like 60,000. Of these were filed with FMCSA and the success rate is actually OK on these. It's not the same as data queues where it's kind of abysmal. But just right off the bat, it was knocked down from 6060 of the filings were knocked down to not even eligible for the program, which left 45,000 more. And at the end of the day, after everything else is cut out, whether it's lack of response or whatever, it was down to like maybe 38 or 40,000 that was I think maybe marches. Numbers. Essentially you have. To be within a certain criteria to follow this, you can't just say hey, I felt like we weren't at fault. It has to fit in the criteria. When you go on to file it, it's going to ask you to enter your data. What action are you looking for? Which one do you want to want to challenge? Once you challenge them or begin the challenge, it's going to ask you which one of these categories it falls into. And the eligibility criterias are structured where wrong direction, parked or legally stopped, failure of other vehicle to stop under the influence medical. Issues falling asleep, distraction, cargo, debris and infrastructure, animal strike, suicide. Rare or unusual? Another thing to keep in mind is that when it comes to the crash preventability determinations, those are actually, as I understand it, made by employees of FM CSA in part unlike your typical data queue challenges to like maintenance violations, which are reviewed and adjudicated by the state law enforcement agency that wrote the violation, they crash preventability determinations are actually.
