The British Army is currently exploring various options to update its short-range air defence arsenal, following the transfer of Stormer vehicles to Ukraine in 2022 as part of a Granting in Kind. Discussions regarding potential replacements are underway, but no definitive decisions have been announced. Details on the deliberations remain undisclosed, attributed to commercial sensitivities. The information came to light in the following response to a Parliamentary Written Question. James Cartlidge, Minister of State for the Ministry of Defence, stated: “The Army is considering multiple platforms to replenish its short-range air defence following the Granting in Kind of Stormer vehicles to Ukraine in 2022. While discussions are ongoing, no decision has been made and further information cannot be disclosed due to commercial sensitivities.”

Mark Keane is correct. The way forward is a full and speedy implementation of the LOA2 recommendations as set out in the report of the Commission on the Defence Forces. The plan is there, the public support is there, the need is there… what is missing is the political direction and will. This problem has been brewing for over a decade. We have seen no political leadership on defence and national security for that decade. The decision to appoint the Commission was the first positive move, but the foot dragging on implementation since the Commission reported is shocking… and frankly irresponsible. Final point… the first political step must be to appoint a stand alone Defence minister. This new minister would only have a few months in office before an election, but they should have the political backing of An Taoiseach to secure a major increase in the 2025 defence budget

Foreign companies operating in the military equipment repair market in Ukraine are not integrated into the document management system of the Ministry of Defence and do not understand decision-making algorithms. As I wrote earlier, this leads to false conclusions and unproductive losses. The inability to carry out a full cycle of repairs and routine labour also plays a negative role. The absence of a full cycle of work, in turn, makes it impossible to obtain structured information about the condition of products and the history of their repairs. This list of problems has a full range of causes and solutions that will be outlined in subsequent publications.
