Back in January while in London I took a little trip down memory lane. I went back to the first office I ever worked in! 👩💼📝 Chance brought us together, as I sat in the recruiter's office nearby one Tuesday morning waiting for someone to call in need of a temp for the day. It was unlikely I'd be selected as there were two other temp hopefuls in ahead of me. By 9.30am, no calls had come in, so they left. But I guess patience pays as 15 minutes later, the call came in! Before sending me on my way, the recruiter asked - "Have you done reception work before?" Me: "No." Recruiter: "You'll be fine. If they ask, just say yes." I recently saw a position posted for “Director of First Impressions,” and I was in awe. Being an individual from an administrative background, I would get discouraged when individuals would say and “this is our office assistant,” at initial introductions. Administrative professionals are much more than paper pushers, receptionists and people to turn to when the printer breaks. We are the first contact with a new client, first face to new employees and clients. Most importantly when business executives are on flights, phone calls and meetings, the admin is whom individuals turn to. It is time to start bestowing titles to administrative professionals that truly encompass their responsibility to the company. For all hiring managers and business executives, you would be surprised how much happier your admin team would be to have a title that is amongst the ranks of supervisors considering much of the admin work is implemented at such a level. Administrative Assistant becoming obsolete. Yes, Technology and security needs have evolved and merged many jobs/tasks over the years. But the administrative assistant duty can't be obsolete. 1st face of a business being a human is always preferred by customers and clients. Most businesses are replacing entrance security with cameras, swipe cards, and remote-managed door locks. The administrative assistants are thus picking up many additional roles which now include managing the swipe cards, entering/updating/collecting employee access cards, receiving customer calls not handled by the automated system, and taking action needed to route them where best handled. If a department area needs help escorting a visitor to a meeting room or employee, the Admin Assistant is normally expected to fill that role. Admin Asst will likely handle or screen Corporate Office head calls and general email traffic. Admin Assistant will likely pick up public relations, mail handling, copy machine, and office supply management, plus website management duties. Travel coordination for company business and electronic time card management is often added to Admin Asst duties. The position has evolved from several secretary/ receptionist/ supply clerk/ etc. prior names and duties to one or two Admin Asst. The position will be around for much longer, and the duties will keep on growing. So, don't think Administrative Assistant duty is obsolete because of Technology.
