An interesting voice in what modern education should (and shouldn't) do on a state level, straight from the UK Parliament. The Education Committee for 11-16 education just released the report stating that British education requires "urgent change." This is not surprising, but its recommendations can surprise more than a few people. Key highlights of the recommendations - More creative, technical, and vocational learning - Reduced #GCSE curricula content - More subject choices (and scrapping English Baccalaureate) - Less focus on exams and inclusion of non-exam assessments - On-screen examinations - Improvements in #literacy and #numeracy (interestingly separated from calling them English and Math). Few of those sound just like someone has finally seen what #MYP is all about, but in my opinion the most interesting recommendation is strengthening creative, technical, and vocational learning at the clear expense of reducing the amount of knowledge imparted. With anti-#immigration rhetoric circulating globally & talk of #internationalstudent caps in #australia #canada & the #uk, this is a real worry for UK #highereducation as a whole. With domestic fees frozen international revenue is one of the only levers available to “balance the books.” If the government restrict international numbers a number of universities may “go to the wall.” “Top #universities in the United Kingdom say they will have to recruit more #internationalstudents unless there's an increase in #tuition fees. The warning follows Suella Braverman’s plans to remove the rights of international students to bring their family members to the UK as part of efforts to reduce net #migration, [with the exception of #postgraduate research students ] #Erudera.com. Earlier this year, the UK government announced that for the sixth consecutive year, it has decided to frozen #tuition fees for students studying during the 2023/24 & 2024/25 academic years, at £9,250… The Russell Group of Universities said that the sector's funding for next year is projected to reach the “lowest point in this millennium.” It said that universities are increasing international student enrollment in a bid to address the high costs, & the sector will be forced to recruit more international students if tuition fees continue to be frozen. “International students make a huge contribution to the UK. As well as bringing a wide range of cultural, social & economic benefits, revenue from international students is reinvested into high-quality #education & research to benefit all students,” Tim Bradshaw told i news, while pointing out that universities will collaborate with the government for a more affordable & fair funding model. UK universities have recorded an increase in their income, with nearly 20% coming from international students compared to 10% a decade ago.” Asia Careers Group SDN BHD - Investing in International Futures AGCAS British Council BUILA Jisc Office for Students UCAS UKCISA Universities Scotland Universities UK Universities UK International
