Salesforce conducted its first-ever Football Fiesta over the weekend and being a boyhood football fan, I had to play. The picture has no trophy coz we finished 5th out of 16 teams. We came for Messi, but we’ll come back for the community. Lionel Messi, one of the all time soccer greats, was scheduled to play in Vancouver, BC last night, but did not. I’m not going to go into the details (you can read about this on other platforms), but I would like to share how this event has led me to insights about my own approach to customer/client relations and loyalty. Facts about last night’s match: 🏟️ Over 51,000 patrons attended the game despite Messi’s absence. 🎽 There were 1000s of fans sporting Messi kits (jerseys). 🏔️Althouh many claimed to be there just for Messi, the roar of the crowd whenever the Whitecaps had a chance to score was electric. Average attendance at Vancouver Whitecaps FC games are one of the lowest in the entire league, just under 17,000 a match. In my eyes, this Messi 😉 situation has provided a grand opportunity for this organization to reconcile and nurture these new relationships regardless of what brought them. If I wanted keep these fans of the game coming back, I’d take HubSpot’s advice on customer loyalty: ✔️Be as generous as your customers. ✔️Show your gratitude. ✔️Provide benefits to your customers with every purchase. ✔️Communicate effectively with your customers. 🥰Build a useful community for your customers. The last is my favourite and just might make me a fan. At a time when there is so much divisiveness, coming together with a bunch of strangers cheering on the same team is just enough 🥰 to keep me coming back.
