Ted Jenkins, a senior engineer at Intel and one of the company's first hires, transformed my understanding of power dynamics when I interviewed him back in the 1990s. Then we can go onto the rest of it. Ted explained that Intel's success in leveraging strategic ideas from individuals at all levels was rooted in the recognition of four kinds of power that operate within any organization. Let's explore them together: 1️⃣ The power of position: This form of power stems from our title, job description, and the place we hold on the org chart. While positional power bestows formal control over resources and decision-making, it remains extrinsic, detached from our individual talents and merits. Our position is a temporary slot that we fill, preexisting our tenure and enduring beyond our departure. 2️⃣ The power of expertise: Intrinsic to us, this power is rooted in the skills and knowledge we bring to our jobs, honed through training and practice. These talents reside in our minds and bodies, constantly renewing and growing with use. Expertise is a power we carry with us, even if we move on from the organization. 3️⃣ The power of connections: It rests in the web of personal relationships we cultivate, from acquaintances to those within six degrees of separation. Nurturing a robust network enables the flow of resources, ideas, and information, fostering opportunities for innovation. High-functioning teams can transform an entire organization by tapping into unexpected skills from diverse connections. 4️⃣ The power of personal authority: Irrespective of our position, personal authority is the ability to inspire trust and respect among colleagues. This power can far outweigh one's positional power. From a supply chain clerk identifying a new distribution link to an admin acting as the eyes and ears of a top executive, personal authority amplifies impact, empowering others along the way. Ted Jenkins was a visionary ahead of his time, and his ideas remain revolutionary even today. May Ted's wisdom open pathways of self-discovery for us all.
