NATO could reduce an industry field for its Alliance Future Surveillance and Control (AFSC) program, meant to replace the aging E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, in the next half year, according to an official with competitor L3Harris. “In the next six months we believe there will be some discussions [between NATO and AFSC competitors] and downselects with a lot of pending politics behind it,” Tara Martin, senior director business development, ISR sector at L3Harris told Breaking Defense in a recent interview. Senior Assessment Officer | Weapon systems and geopolitical specialist with +32K followers on Twitter 🔺OSINT🔻GEOINT
As part of the "MRIC" (Medium-Range Intercept Capability) project of the US Marine Corps, #USMC moved forward with the purchase of #Israel's Iron Dome system. The system includes launchers with Tamir missiles manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, AN / TPS-80 G / radar ATOR manufactured by Northrop Grumman, and the CAC2S (Common Aviation Command & Control System) control system. So, the USMC plans to receive 3 batteries of the system, a total of 44 launchers (20 missiles each), and 1,840 Tamir interceptor missiles (some sources give the figure "about 2,000 missiles"). It can be seen that the number of missiles is equal to 92 rounds of 1 launcher. As for the number of launchers, 44 each gives 3 batteries of 14 launchers and 2 more spares. These figures are much higher than those used in #Israel (3 launchers in a battery), so perhaps we are talking about 3 divisions of 12 launchers each and 8 more spare launchers. The value of the deal is not known. The estimate is that missiles alone will cost about $200 million, i.e. approximately $109,000 per rocket. This is more expensive than the commonly quoted $50,000-100,000 per missile in Israel, but for the USMC, the missiles will be largely produced in the US by Raytheon Technologies (the former Raytheon Company, merged with United Technologies Corporation in April 2020). Accordingly, the Pentagon contract will be concluded with Raytheon Technologies, and Rafael will play the role of a subcontractor. The #USA Ministry of Defense has already conducted two cycles of testing, and the results impressed the Americans, which contributed to the promotion of the deal. The MOD plans to use the MRIC to protect forward bases from cruise missiles and UAVs, as well as from rocket and artillery attacks. #USMCIronDomeDeal #DefensePartnership #AdvancedInterceptTech #USMilitaryModernization #MarineCorpsSecurity

Missile Defense Interceptor Race Heats Up ________________________________________ The race to develop a next-generation missile defense interceptor for the US is intensifying, with two rival teams entering the critical design phase. Northrop Grumman, partnering with Raytheon, has taken the lead by successfully completing its preliminary design review ahead of schedule. This puts them in a strong position to deliver an operational interceptor sooner than expected, potentially by 2027. Meanwhile, the Lockheed Martin-led team, partnering with Aerojet Rocketdyne, is neck-and-neck. Both teams are leveraging digital design techniques to accelerate the development process, aiming to replace the current fleet of Ground-Based Interceptors (GBIs) that lack the capability to counter advanced threats. The current GBIs, deployed in Alaska and California, are vulnerable to missiles equipped with multiple warheads or decoys. The new interceptors, designed with modern technology and digital tools, will offer enhanced defense against such evolving threats. Northrop Grumman's early progress, built on a faster design cycle and early hardware testing, gives them a potential edge in this critical competition. This development marks a significant step forward in bolstering US missile defense capabilities. The final selection of the winning design will be determined by factors like performance, cost, and schedule adherence. It remains to be seen who will cross the finish line first, but both teams are pushing the boundaries of technology and design to deliver a more robust defense system for the nation. #missile #airforce #technology #military #spaceforce (Image Source: Northrop Grumman)

TL;DR Thank you IAI - Israel Aerospace Industries, Israel Defense Forces and our allied forces. Many of my friends have kindly reached out and shared support and empathy after Iran's unprecedented attack on Israel early Sunday morning, when some of Israel's population felt for the first time in many years, an existential threat. The last time our people were under a similar attack was in 1991, when Iraq led by Saddam Hussien fired Scud missiles into an Israel that had no defense against them. Since then, the IDF air defense and counterstrike capabilities have both improved significantly. Yet the local public felt stressed, as schools and camps were canceled, and the Home Front Command ordered civilians to refrain from gatherings of 100+ people. Social media filled with anxious posts of the upcoming attack, and people watched in fear as ballistic missiles with payloads of 500 kg each made their way toward Israel – in total, over 60 tons of explosives. Sounds like a sci-fi movie? It was the local reality this week. Imagine what would have happened if just ONE of these missiles would hit its' target... In an extreme, sophisticated scenario which involved over 300 ballistic missiles (that fly very high), UAVs (fly low and slow), and cruise missiles (fly low and fast) – all of which, in a very short timeframe and dense, crowded space - most were intercepted. The morning of April 14th could have been completely different if not for the exemplary, groundbreaking multi-layered air defense technological systems developed over the past 30 years by IAI (mainly Arrow 3 and ELTA Systems Ltd Green Pine radar), for the IDF succeeding to navigate this multi-missile attack, and for our allies, the United States, Britain, France, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. We are thankful to you all. 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇫🇷🇯🇴🇸🇦🇦🇪🇮🇱 It is my honor and priviledge, and a thrilling ride (literally) to work with top-notch engineers and business leaders - that also keep us safe.
