Require women to be drafted? A great example of how multiple policy failures come together for a "Say, what???" event, in this case a Senate (Dem-led) Armed Forces Committee proposal to include women in the draft. Here's why 2024 is the wake-up year for both employers and the military. US fertility and birth rates dropped like a rock in 2008 (recession), never recovered, and are now the lowest in US history. That was 16 years ago, making 2024 the first year the military and employers finally have to face the reality of as many as 11 million delayed or missing births since 2008* with no improvement in sight. Combine that with a lousy economy in the two childbearing demographics (Millennials and older Gen Z), in every study for over a century known to be the root cause of faltering birth rates. Simple Maslow's hierarchy: if you can't afford a home, you sure don't start/build a family. Add in the US consistently ranking in the bottom 5 of 40 OECD nations in economic support for pregnancy and young families. More vectors: an unemployment rate <4%, lack of any rational policy on either side of the aisle on immigration (which historically backfilled US births), and a higher percent of ineligible or uninterested military candidates--and here we are. There are other real military and country identity factors as well. The UK has the same issue and is also looking at how to deal with it with some interesting tweaks. Here in the US, four months before an election, it's yet another scream-but-definitely-don't-really-discuss wedge issue, although Schumer shows no interest in bringing it to the floor. No surprise there. BTW, this is also a key reason why we're suddenly hearing so much about the glories of being a baby-producing tradwife (until his midlife crisis requires younger, sexier arm candy, leaving the original 40+ or 50 YO appetizer model divorced and with no job experience). And it's absolutely linked to abortion and now contraception politics, the latter already bubbling up in a state near you. Then throw in gender war dog whistles, like a story this week from The Federalist entitled "If they want to vote, women should be subject to the draft." ANYthing but actual policy. *based on 2007 fertility rate #military #militaryrecruitment #birthrate #fertility #births #pregnancy #immigration #election #economy #demographics #recruitment #employers #employee #generations #genz #millennials #OECD #abortion #birthcontrol #tradwife #genderwars
