☀️Lovely! “Renewable energy accounted for more than 30% of the world’s electricity for the first time last year following a rapid rise in wind and solar power, according to new figures. ⚡️New report says humans may be on brink of cutting fossil fuel generation, even as demand for electricity rises. ❌📉Clean electricity has already helped to slow the growth in fossil fuels by almost two-thirds in the past 10 years, according to the report by climate thinktank Ember. It found that renewables have grown from 19% of electricity in 2000 to more than 30% of global electricity last year. 📈World leaders are aiming to grow renewables to 60% of global electricity by 2030 under an agreement struck at the UN’s Cop28 climate change conference in December. ⬆️This would require countries to triple their current renewable electricity capacity in the next six years, which would almost halve power sector emissions.” ♻️🤔As a circular economy expert I’m always worried about where the materials for all this infrastructure will come from and how it will produced. It would be interesting to know if we could use some of the discarded fossil infrastructure to build the renewables with. 👉What are your thoughts about this? The clean energy revolution is accelerating! ☀️⚡ For the first time ever, renewable energy sources accounted for over 30% of the world's electricity. This incredible milestone suggests we're on the verge of finally reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Key takeaways from Ember's new report: - Solar power is booming: It was the fastest-growing electricity source for the 19th year in a row! - Fossil fuel decline is now inevitable: Clean energy is poised to drive a 2% decrease in global fossil fuel generation in the coming year. We've got a long way to go: Doubling (or even tripling) our renewable capacity in the next few years is crucial for meeting climate goals. Are you working in the renewable energy sector? Share your thoughts on this huge turning point. How can we accelerate the transition even faster? #renewableenergy #cleanenergy #sustainability #climatechange #solarpower

🌍 Global Electricity Emissions Nearing Peak 🌱 Ember's report signals a potential peak in global electricity sector emissions this year, driven by a surge in wind and solar power. Key takeaways: - Renewables are growing rapidly, aligning with the goal to triple capacity by the decade's end for the 1.5°C target. - Emissions in H1 2023 only slightly increased compared to last year. - We may be nearing the peak of power sector emissions, aligning with global climate goals. Action is vital. Malgorzata Wiatros-Motyka of Ember stressed the need for a global agreement to triple renewables capacity. Key findings: - Global power-sector emissions up 0.2% in H1 2023. - Wind and solar now at 14.3% of global electricity. - Solar grew 16% in H1 2023, with record generation in 50 countries. This highlights the urgency of tripling global renewable capacity for a sustainable future. 🌏 #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction #Sustainability #EnergySavings

#3xRenewables by 2030 and 5x by 2035 requires $2 Trillion per year of investment in generation and grids. "The renewables industry stands ready to deliver on the global tripling goal. However, in order to get there in time, we need governments to take urgent action to turbocharge an already buoyant renewables market. Public finance is key, especially international support to provide access to low-cost capital for emerging markets to join the renewables era, ensuring a clean, secure and just transition for all.” Read the full Climate Analytics report here:

The developed world is doing okay when it comes to renewable energy installations, but needs to set more ambitious targets and triple renewable capacity to 11 terawatts by 2030 to meet climate targets, according to energy think tank Ember. The research group looks at 57 countries and the EU, and says there is so much more development in national pipelines that national targets should be lifted. “The targets of today are already outdated and should be updated,” said Ember global analyst Dr Katye Altieri. “Governments have yet to understand the revolution that’s underway with renewables. As we approach COP28, leaders should be confident in supporting a global goal to triple renewables; it is looking more possible than ever to achieve. “Tripling renewable capacity worldwide is the single biggest action required this decade for the climate. The question will be whether governments have the ambition to capitalise on the potential “explosion” of wind and solar power, says Ingrid Behrsin, Global Energy Monitor program director for renewables and other power. https://lnkd.in/gxKJC9i5

#Renewableenergy surged to over 30% of global electricity in 2023, marking a significant milestone and indicating a potential decline in fossil fuel usage. #Solar power, especially, outpaced expectations, becoming the fastest-growing and largest source of new electricity. A comprehensive study by Ember covering 80 countries suggests a 2% decrease in fossil fuel generation ahead. However, fossil fuels remain dominant in other sectors. To meet UN targets, countries must triple renewable electricity capacity by 2030, aiming for 60% renewables, a move pivotal in reducing power sector emissions and combating climate change. https://lnkd.in/d9U97ude #thomaslloyd #renewableenergy #infrastructure #esg #netzero #asia #climatechange #sustainability #emergingmarkets #energytransition #electricity #biomass
