If you build it, they will come. American rail projects suffer from austerity coming from each level of government. Brightline shows that when operators have control of decisionmaking, and funding, projects can be highly successful evenenvironments actively hostile to public transit. The high levels of scrutiny given to transit spending by city and state officials often force transit agencies to make tradeoffs which decresse a project’s utility. The American habit of squeezing budgets in an attempt to “do more with less” has ruined dozens of amazing transit projects. From rural station placements on California High Speed Rail, to VIA rail refurbishing 1940s trains, to our systemic reluctance to grade-separate our light metros, our country need to learn to bite the bullet and prioritize the long-term benefits of long term projects, instead of cutting costs for short term gain.

They do not fit onto modern rail freight double-stack containers rail cars (wagins) As the attached 2019 report by me for FreightWaves shows, the evidence is a declining long run exit from railroad moved trailers on freight cars (TOFC). Check this baseline against the AAR or other reports covering years 2020 to 2024. The railroads don’t have an integrated economic/engineering business model to go out and capture truck semi-trailer business share. Do they? Evidence that internally we insiders have realized for about three to four decades. UNLESS - we can convince freight shippers to convert from semi-trailers to stackable containers in a much bigger way. Yes? No? Cheers! California to Start Phase Out All Diesel Trucks at Ports Next Year PUBLISHED MAY 1, 2023 6:59 PM BY THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE Under the new rule, fleet owners operating vehicles for private services such as last-mile delivery and federal fleets such as the Postal Service, along with state and local government fleets, will begin their transition toward zero-emission vehicles starting in 2024. Drayage trucks, including those used to haul containers and freight from the ports as well as rail yards, are among the first to be targeted. Only zero-emission drayage trucks may register with CARB starting January 1, 2024. While there are provisions to phase out older trucks and ensure that operate through their useful life, dryage trucks will need to be zero-emissions by 2035.
