⭐⭐ THE BIGGEST STAR IN FINANCIAL PLANNING = THE BIGGEST STAR IN BASEBALL ⭐⭐ 💰💰 Shohei Ohtani just signed a 10 year, $700,000,000 contract with the LA Dodgers. This is the largest contract in American pro sports history. 💰💰 The next largest contract in MLB history is Mike Trout at $426,500,000, about a quarter BILLION less than Ohtani Here's where it gets interesting.... There are reports that instead of being paid $70,000,000 a year for 10 years, Ohtani has elected to defer $680,000,000 of his compensation. From 2024-2033, Ohtani will actually be one of the lowest paid players in baseball, receiving *just* $2,000,000 a year. From 2034-2043, he'll receive his deferred comp payouts of $68,000,000 a year. THIS is where the fun begins. Because of the deferral, the NET PRESENT VALUE of this deal is closer to $460,000,000. Much, much closer to Mike Trout's contract value. Money today is worth more than money at a later date. Also, since Ohtani plays for the LA Dodgers, much of his income would have been taxed at California state tax rates which will be as high as 14.4%! What this does for the Dodgers: - improves cash flow today, allowing them to sign another star player - allows them to reduce their luxury tax liability to $46M a year, compared to $70M a year if no money was deferred - allows for the Dodgers to spend even more during Ohtani's time with the team, increasing their chances at winning a World Series What this does for Ohtani (and his agent): - they can now say he signed a $700M contract, despite the NPV being much lower - while he's only receiving a $2M salary, he reportedly earns about $40M a year from sponsors, so cash flow probably isn't a concern for Ohtani... - Maybe most importantly, there could be MAJOR advantages for his AFTER-TAX income. Between moving out of California, and even back to Japan, there could be major planning opportunities for Ohtani to reduce his tax liability and receive more net income Ohtani is taking on some risk - tax rate changes, law changes, and with the huge numbers involved in this deal I believe there will be many eyes on deals like this going forward. It'll be interesting to see how Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Players Association, and states like California deal with these contracts, if they will even continue to be allowed. But, for now, Shohei Ohtani is the current face of financial planning.
