Those of you who know us at C1 Wealth Management, know that both Jacob and Jason have children with Down Syndrome, Hailey and Nic. One of the areas that we focus our efforts around is supporting the Special Needs Community. Today is National "Spread the Word, to End the Word" day. A day that celebrates inclusion of those with intellectual disabilities. This day was started by student activists in 2009 and the current campaign is part of the Special Olympics supported by Best Buddies and the Kennedy Foundation. As we celebrate 15 years of Spread the Word, we're reflecting on the incredible journey and the impact this campaign has had in fostering inclusion and breaking down stereotypes. Now, we're energized to renew our commitment by returning to the roots of the campaign, reigniting the spark and momentum that defined its early days in 2009. With the same passion and dedication, we aim to journey back to the heart of our mission. We're eager to inspire change, one word at a time. In our commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering acceptance, we recognize the importance of adaptability and relevance. Spread the Word was created to End the Word and we believe we should stick to the core reason why this campaign was created, to commit to acknowledging the hurt caused by disparaging words towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The R word is not as prevalent, but it is still used, along with other derogatory language words. Words matter because they hold the power to shape perceptions, influence emotions, and drive actions. The language we use can either foster understanding, empathy, and unity, or perpetuate stereotypes, division, and discrimination. Choosing our words carefully is essential for effective communication and building a more inclusive and compassionate society. The most potent tool we can give the next generation? The power of their own voice. 🎤 This message rang loud and clear for me yesterday. At both the Care Leaver Covenant #ies23 and The Brokerage celebration event, young people took centre stage. Sharing their lived experience, achievements, and wisdom. Their contributions far exceeded the impact any “expert” could have had in that context. It’s important we advocate for young talent. But not at the expense of their own authentic expression. As inclusion professionals and youth practitioners we often assume the role of spokesperson. TELLING others about the value of this untapped talent. But these young people are more than capable of SHOWING that themselves. Let’s stop talking about their potential; when we can give them the platform to reveal it!

Disability is not Inability. Inclusion of persons with disability and creation of inclusive environment is an important issue we need to bear in mind in every step of our life.
