Harnessing Quantum Power for Societal Impact and Overcoming Barriers to International Cooperation I recently attended a luncheon at the Swiss Embassy in Paris, hosted by Ambassador Roberto Balzaretti , focused on "Open Quantum - Quantum Technology for Society." Switzerland's long-standing tradition of fostering global connections made it a fitting location for these important discussions on Open Quantum. The event featured engaging conversations with representatives from QuantumBasel (Julien Baglio, Ph.D. ), ETH Zurich, EPFL (Philippe Caroff ), UNESCO (Amal Kasry ), Quantonation (Olivier Tonneau), Sorbonne (Nicolas Treps), CEA (Natalia Sergeeva-Chollet ), Swiss Quantum Initiative (Mayumi Claire Hamada (👋 fellow #MicrofluidicsQuantum scientist). We explored international collaboration, dual-use technology, export controls, and essential funding for quantum computing development. We also discussed the efforts of the OQI – Open Quantum Institute in making quantum advancements accessible to all. The OQI channels these advancements towards societal benefits, addressing global challenges like healthcare, climate change, and food security, with applications relevant to NGOs. [international cooperation] Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) have launched a Joint Call for proposals aiming at bilateral projects in Quantum Technologies, an emerging priority area in both Japan and Germany. Proposals submitted to JST and DFG will be evaluated jointly and adopted projects will be respectively supported by both agencies. Japan-based research teams will be supported by JST through the ASPIRE (Adopting Sustainable Partnerships for Innovative Research Ecosystem) programme; Germany-based research teams will be supported by the DFG via a standard research grant (“Sachbeihilfe”). There is a missing link between investment in innovation and applications to sustainable development. Most patented inventions are not aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. The OQI – Open Quantum Institute aims to fill this gap. By working backwards from sustainability missions, putting together cross-sector talent, and providing broad access to quantum computing, OQI is the type of new institution we need to align innovation and governance for humanity. I was fortunate to join its operational launch at CERN - and I am excited to see what will be built in the next three years. The Finnish government has awarded a cool €13 million to the Finnish Quantum Flagship, a major initiative to solidify Finland's place as a quantum leader.
