Planning standards for the next US nuclear build could be our own Palo Verde nuclear plant in Arizona, or the decreasing overnight costs now being experienced in Asia. Vogtle III & IV, although expensive are not failures, but one of our finest hours - and best first attempts at reestablishing clean baseload energy - for 9 reasons: 1. It works. 2. It works almost 100 Percent of the time. 3. It will work that way for 80 years or more. Probably 100 years. 4. It doesn't emit CO2. 5. It taught us lessons and started the formation of a skilled labor pool. 6. It has inherent safety features. 7. It's American made by union labor (Westinghouse AP-1000). 8. It represents the inevitable step in moving society to the next denser fuel. 9. Building big nuclear reactors is happening all over the world because it's the fastest path to energy independence and abundance. I am proud of Vogtle III & IV and the people who built them. We just need to get the desk jockeys out of the way and let the engineers build this stuff.
$6.4 billion for 1.5 GW of intermittent wind power, $4/watt, exceeds expected costs for full-time new nuclear power plants. https://lnkd.in/e6wQkgX4

MODULARITY + SPEED = SUCCESS The figure below is a great example of this formula. Think solar, wind, batteries, EVs, transmission lines ... anything that can be built like Lego, building big from small. It's the secret to getting big things done – including resolving the climate crisis, or so Dan Gardner and I argue in our book, "How Big Things Get Done": https://lnkd.in/eWRX74gE China is better at it than any other geography, as the diagram illustrates. Which should make the rest of the world sit up and get their act together, or they risk being outcompeted over the next few decades..
Solar power this century. In 2023 about 450 gigawatts were installed worldwide. To put that in perspective, a fair sized nuclear plant is about 1 gigawatt. #EnergyTransition
