The Maastricht Treaty, officially known as the Treaty on European Union (TEU), was signed on November 7, 1991, in the city of Maastricht, and It entered into force on November 1, 1993. This treaty was one of the first stones that permitted the formation of the European Union (EU). It was a political and economic union: it covered the policies of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), it introduced the concept of EU citizenship, as well as many other aspects. However, it's important to note that the Maastricht Treaty represented a major step forward in European integration, but it also had to face some controversies and debates, especially regarding the creation EURO currency.
