At Oak Ridge National Laboratory, scientists are leveraging HORIBA’s fluorescence spectroscopy to develop in-situ, online monitoring tools for radioactive materials. This innovative approach enables real-time analysis and optimization of nuclear processes, ensuring safer and more efficient handling of these critical substances. The applications of this technology are vast, including monitoring processing streams in advanced nuclear reactors, overseeing radioisotope production for generating plutonium-238 for the Mars Rover and producing medical isotopes for cancer treatment. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in recycling nuclear fuel and closing the fuel cycle, allowing for better utilization of our used nuclear fuel supply. 📃Scientific paper: The impact of nuclear reactions on the neutron-star g-mode spectrum Abstract: Mature neutron stars are expected exhibit gravity g-modes due to stratification caused by varying composition. These modes are affected by nuclear reactions, leading to complex (damped) mode frequencies and the suppression of high order g-modes, in contrast with the common non-dissipative analysis which leads to an infinite g-mode spectrum. Focusing on the transition between the fast and slow reaction regimes, we examine the impact of nuclear reactions on the g-mode spectrum. BREAKING: Denmark establishes Center for Nuclear Energy ☢️ Today the DTU - Technical University of Denmark announced they’re uniting all nuclear energy research in a new interdisciplinary center. This is a true nuclear renaissance, as Denmark once had a nuclear research program at Risø research facility led by Niels Bohr. The new center will be led by senior researcher at DTU, Bent Lauritzen once again at Risø reseach center. The President of DTU, Anders Overgaard Bjarklev expresses his deepest appreciation of the new center in a official press release: "The climate crisis has reached an extent that makes it crucial that we research all technologies that may be relevant in phasing out fossil energy sources. Regardless of whether nuclear power has a future in Denmark, it is important for DTU to have research in the field because we have an obligation to contribute research-based knowledge to society and our students. Our ambition with the creation of the new center is to strengthen the part of the research that is specifically aimed at nuclear energy technologies.” Link to the press release can be found in the comments 👇

In the last week at Forschungszentrum Jülich Institute of Nuclear Waste Management we hosted the “Transient” kickoff meeting together with project partners from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and SCK CEN. The “Transient” Project is a German Federal Ministry for Education and Research funded project devoted to mixed oxide (MOX) spent nuclear fuel science. MOX nuclear fuel has been employed widely in German in addition to global nuclear power reactor fleets for energy production and continues to be prolifically used. Compared to regular fuels, MOX contains significant amounts of plutonium in the fresh fuel blend often incorporated heterogeneously. The fuel is subsequently far more intricate than traditional UO2 based fuels and accordingly requires special attention for its continued efficient use and eventual disposal. The Transient project is devoted to its investigation through experimental methods involving the production of representative Pu doped UO2 materials and examination of irradiated MOX specimens coming out of reactors.
