Did you know? 😱 As of January 2022, more than 9,000 metric tons of space waste is orbiting Earth. This waste includes abandoned technologies, lost tools, remnants of spaceships, rockets, and satellites that have died or aren't working anymore. The waste is classified by size, with estimates of: 😣 More than 10 cm: Over 25,000 known objects, including tools and defunct satellites.  😒 1–10 cm: Approximately 500,000 particles, ranging in size from a marble to a tennis ball.  😏 Less than 1 cm: More than 128 million fragments, most of which are undetectable.  😯 Less than 0.4 in: Researchers estimate more than 100 trillion untracked pieces, likely the majority of the debris. 😵 The waste can be dangerous, as it can collide with each other and break into smaller pieces, affect the Earth's magnetic field, and indirectly impact the weather. Objects in orbit that are 600 kilometers or less will usually fall back to Earth within a few years, burning up before reaching the surface. However, debris in the equatorial plane can remain in orbit for thousands of years. 😎 Space agencies and companies that launch satellites are taking steps to reduce the amount of space waste, such as deorbiting satellites when their missions are complete. They are also testing technologies to remove space debris by capturing it with a net or harpoon. 🤔 Any thoughts? #space #spacejunk #waste #junkonspace #satellitesjunk #debrisinspace
