Sustainability in Community Interventions: Lessons Learned and Best Practices in my 4 years of working with the community. Community interventions play a crucial role in addressing various societal challenges, ranging from healthcare and education to environmental conservation. However, sustaining these interventions beyond their initial funding period often poses a significant challenge. Through my experiences in community work, I've identified key factors that contribute to the sustainability of projects and programs.For today ,I will focus on two factors: 1.0 Incentivizing Community-Based Volunteers (CBVs): The sustainability of interventions often hinges on the dedication of community-based volunteers. Disparities in incentives provided by different NGOs can hinder project continuity. To address this, a harmonized incentive system for CBVs should be established through government policy formulation. Stakeholder mapping and engagement at district, provincial, and national levels can facilitate the development of inclusive and consistent policies. Ensuring the dedication of community-based volunteers (CBVs) is paramount for the sustainability of interventions. However, disparities in incentives provided by various NGOs can create challenges for project continuity. To overcome this hurdle, establishing a unified incentive system for CBVs through government policy formulation becomes imperative. Engaging stakeholders at different levels, including district, provincial, and national, is essential for developing inclusive and consistent policies that support the commitment of volunteers. For instance, a tangible example underscores the need for a harmonized incentive structure. Consider a scenario where a CBV collaborates with three different NGOs. Each NGO provides varying lunch allowances: NGO (A) offers K50, NGO (B) provides K100, and NGO (C), emphasizing program ownership, offers nothing. Faced with such discrepancies, the CBV may prioritize attendance at meetings for NGO (B) while neglecting commitments to NGOs (A) and (C). This underscores the necessity for a standardized incentive approach to ensure the sustainability of projects and programs. The development of a harmonized incentive system, informed by stakeholder consultations and policy formulation, not only addresses disparities but also promotes equity and fairness in recognizing the valuable contributions of CBVs across diverse NGOs. This approach strengthens the collaborative spirit essential for the enduring success of community interventions.

*WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SCO EA:* HOW SCOEA SUSTAIN ITSELF FINANCIALLY? The Shirikisha Civic Organization of East Africa (SCOEA) has incorporated a social enterprise sustainability model to reduce reliance on donations and create financial independence. This carefully planned strategy involves establishing various social enterprises that serve both the community and generate profits, thereby ensuring the organization's long-term sustainability. Under the Community Health and Social Inclusion program, SCOEA has set up *Kalu Mart Health Centre* in Western Uganda. This facility provides comprehensive and compassionate healthcare services, catering to the healing and effective treatment of every client while also operating as a revenue-generating entity. In line with the Social Entrepreneurship program, the organization has established *Musinguka Tourism Company Limited* , which offers environmentally friendly tourism services. This enterprise also utilizes tourism as a conservation tool, promoting sustainable practices while generating income for SCOEA. Addressing climate change and environmental sustainability, SCOEA has launched *RARTA Waste and Energy Solutions Uganda.* This entity provides waste management services and uses innovative methods to produce briquettes and other fuel solutions from waste materials, contributing to both environmental preservation and financial sustainability. Furthermore, the Financial Inclusion program includes *SCO Finance Limited,* which focuses on providing affordable credit to marginalized communities. This initiative not only enhances financial inclusion but also contributes to the financial sustainability of the organization. By carefully aligning these social enterprises with its programs, SCOEA has diversified its sources of revenue while directly impacting the communities it serves. This strategic approach enables the organization to address social and environmental challenges while simultaneously generating income to support its ongoing initiatives. At the 2023 summit, I was a panel speaker, I spoke about sustainability and the opportunities I find to fulfil my CSR responsibilities. From planting trees to sponsoring stationery giveaway drives for underprivileged schools, I have always tried to give back and do it continuously. I did not do it alone, of course joined hands with volunteer organisations. Today when I witness natural calamities ( is it nature-made or man-made? - my question arises from inside ) I feel compulsive to write this post. The vision of vibha is to empower students and women, I have offered voluntary sessions both for government-aided schools and for individuals in need of support which aligns with the vision. As an entrepreneur, it is crucial to focus on the environment and embrace sustainability. It's not just about earning money and gaining recognition. Whether through small actions or significant initiatives, what truly matters is your contribution to society. I remain committed to doing my part and will continue to do so.
