The Effie Worldwide Global Grands are fast approaching. The lucky winners will in fact not be lucky. Effie represents the iridium standard of rewarding business effects and we see an increasing importance placed on business impact across other awards organisations. The question is, how do you get to these effects and the trophy in your cabinet? This paper from Rachel Rodgers and Shelley Yang provides inspiration and evidence that good quality audience experiences are common to award winning work. Check it out in the link in the comments. Supercharging the reputation, relationships and growth of ambitious leaders and service-led businesses I Consulting I Capability I Coaching
Not so long ago McKinsey Global Institute identified 56 foundational skills and attitudes deemed to be crucial for future work. These were grouped into four categories: Interpersonal, Cognitive, Self-Leadership, Digital. Within these were nestled 13 sub categories and then within those (like some sort of Babushka doll) were the 56 skills and crucially attitudes. My rough estimate is that about one third of these 56 future skills and attitudes sit under the broad umbrella of Communications. Or in other words, how leaders and organisations communicate is a critical future skill - along with digital literacy, grit and persistence, breaking orthodoxies and driving change. It is for this reason that I am continuing on the Board of the IABC Victoria along with our newly appointed President Julia Loughlin MBA, past President David Imber SCMP, GAICD, Tiji Bardall, Susannah Goddard SCMP, Camille Hanton plus a new sweep of very talented individuals (below). It has been some time since I held a dedicated communications role. However I would argue communications and leadership now go hand in hand. The two are inseparable, heightened by the complexity of the business environment (think AI, think climate impacts, think the global /political environment, think the nature of work). With that in mind the work of the IABC globally has never been more pertinent. Championing a continual uplift in the professional standards of business communicators - most of whom are leaders in their own right coupled with advising CEOs, Boards and Management Teams on a raft of issues - 24/7 - for which there is no standard playbook. Curious to learn more? Fab - get in contact with any of the team below. We (and our impressive partner and member cohort representing the big to SME end of town) would love to welcome you and your teams to the fold. Earlier this month, Senior Account Manager Rebecca McLaren competed in the Cannes Young Lions Globe Media Group competition. Given just 24 hours to flip a brief for the media category, she and her partner embraced the opportunity to showcase their industry expertise. Read Rebecca's takeaways below! 🦁 *** Win or lose, Young Lions was an opportunity for myself and my partner to fully own a plan from start to finish. Not only did it put our industry knowledge to the test, but it also challenged us creatively and allowed us to dream up blue-sky ideas for an important cause, reinforcing what I love most about my field of work. Here are just a few things I learned throughout the competition: 1. Take time to think independently. The first thing my partner and I did when we got the brief was read it individually and take our own notes. While a lot of our initial thoughts ended up being the same, we each pulled a few nuggets the other hadn't thought about, helping us avoid groupthink and leading to a stronger end result. 2. Don't rush into a solution. The pressure of a 24-hour turnaround had my partner and I itching to "crack the case," but we knew that careful research of our target and a thoughtful insight were what would best lead us there. Though we became set on a potential solution early on and didn't expect ourselves to budge, once the final insight came together, we challenged ourselves to reassess the fit and (unsurprisingly) came up with an idea we loved even more! 3. Write to edit. With a 10-slide maximum and no guaranteed ability to present our deck, my partner and I made an effort to be deliberate about the final copy we chose to include and how it was written. While we were excited about our idea and could see it coming to life, we consistently asked ourselves if everything we were talking about was there in the deck - and if it was being articulated as clearly as it could be.

I had the opportunity to discuss the priorities of the SABC on #FullView with Bongiwe Zwane and give an overview of my first 2 months at SABC. Key messages: - The greatest focus is on our financial model to steady the ship and invest for the future. - We must play to our strengths in our value proposition to advertisers. No other media organisation can offer SABC’s scale, reach and access. - We must give focus to defending our traditional revenue sources whilst putting energy into emerging revenue streams. - Our OTT Platform, SABC Plus represents a whole new source of increased audiences and inventory. It represents incredible opportunity for monetisation. - We are strengthening our sales capability - We are strengthening our partnerships with stakeholders, particularly Sentech, our signal provider. - Optimising the value of our people. Driving renewal, alignment, effort and engagement. - We are committed to delivering wall to wall election coverage that is equitable, fair, impartial and represents the plurality of South African views. To this end we have the largest newsroom in Southern Africa. SABC is the cornerstone of South Africa’s creative economy and we are not planing to fail in this greatest of endeavours.

Meaningful work is the essence of our industry. It means it matters. It is significant, relevant, material, telling, weighty, and worthwhile. It makes the audience think, feel, and act. It drives market share and feeds the salaries of the brand's employees and everyone within the supply chain. The opposite is inconsequential. It doesn't matter. For over a decade, even longer, I have challenged the advertising agency's obsession with chasing glass. Here is an article from 2014, as I am leaving the advertising world, with a call out to clients and advertisers. https://lnkd.in/d8n9Y8vY I have always said that this sector would be revered if even half the time and money their internal teams invested in competing for the thousands of gold awards were diverted to solving society's biggest problems. They would have clients banging on the door and looking for real solutions. Many associations and magazines depend on profits from awards shows, but a healthier industry would lead to healthier businesses. In my upcoming interview with Frank Palmer for the American Marketing Association (AMA), Toronto, he voiced a similar sentiment. in a few seconds, Zulu Alpha Kilo Inc., in this brilliant parody, said what I had felt for years. Enough is enough. Please take a look at this fantastic ad and share it. Now, let's get the top minds of their agencies focused on affordable housing, the growing social divide, keeping young males in schools, donating organs, eliminating food waste, and so much more. Those working on these initiatives will feel much better by improving our world. The owners of agencies can move the millions they spend into hiring and training staff. And for the brilliant creative talent in Canada, is this not the purposeful work you got into the industry for, the work that truly matters?
