I grew up in a working class, migrant household, so tonight's #CSW68 event on "Advancing gender equality and women's empowerment in the context of poverty and migration" felt particularly impactful to me. The overall event discussed the value that migrant women bring, both to their home and migration country. It also questioned the financial and legal protections that are put in place for these women. Migration is often seen as a powerful tool for poverty reduction. Most of the times we think about this in terms of what migrant women are 'gaining' by moving from the global south to the global north. Yet at the same time, migrant women aren't seen as a profitable segment, which may lead to their exclusion from financial services. A representative from Women's World Banking showed an interesting case study that challenges this: Over 1.2 billion USD is sent home annually by Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand, over half of which are women. A second keynote speaker that captured my attention was the representative from the Women in Migration Network (WIMN), who put a strong case forward about the misconceptions we have about 'lower skilled, temporary workers' that migrate through short-term bilateral agreements. According to WIMN, these workers stay over 60 years in their migration country and do bring useful skills to their migrant countries. Such categories may be particularly harmful when considering labour rights and human rights. 💼 In Belgium, 14.6 % of non-EU immigrant women with higher education, are unemployed and looking for work, compared to just 1.9% of Belgian women. This disparity becomes even more pronounced when comparing non-EU immigrant women with lower education, where the unemployment rate rises to 17,6%. These statistics underscore the challenges and marginalization that migrant women face in the Belgian labour market. Many find themselves underemployed, working below their educational qualifications, while also dealing with the daily realities of racism, discrimination and sexism. ✨As we celebrate International Women’s Day, the Displaced Talent for Europe (DT4E) team wants to take a moment to reflect on the untapped potential of labour market integration and labour mobility pathways for migrants and displaced women. SOLIDARITYNOW has published an #empiricalstudy shedding light on "The Reality of Employment for Migrant Women in Greece" Drawing on insights from a survey reaching out to 215 women from 28 countries as well as 11 companies, the study reveals: - The overall deterioration of the employment level of migrant women in Greece compared to their countries of origin. - The underutilization of their skills and qualifications. - Regardless of their level of education and prior experience, migrant women often find themselves in low-skilled jobs with precarious working conditions. - A significant share of women work in undeclared jobs lacking safety nets. Did you know that in 2023 alone, 36% of all occupations across Australia experienced national labour shortages? Yet, many #refugees and #migrants still struggled to find jobs. 🏢 Research by experts like Nu Nu Win and the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector (Vic) shows that even when migrants secure jobs, they often struggle to progress in their careers. 📉 Why? Because they face biases against overseas qualifications, #language #barriers, a limited understanding of Australian workplace culture, lack of upskilling opportunities, and limited #networking skills. 🌏🗣️ To shed light on this issue, I interviewed 30 migrant women and 6 Australian-born Caucasian women to understand their inclination towards personalized support for career progression. 📢 The findings were insightful. While Australian-born women expressed enthusiasm for coaching and mentoring opportunities, migrant communities faced significant obstacles in seeking similar support. As we celebrate Women's History Month, we want to acknowledge the particular challenges faced by migrant women, girls and LGBTQI individuals. According to IOM - UN Migration, an increasing number of women are migrating independently from Central America and the Caribbean. Migration has the potential to create positive outcomes and contribute to women's empowerment. It can open opportunities for: higher income, asset ownership, self-esteem, decision-making power and new autonomy. On the other hand, gender and migration can intersect to produce negative outcomes, such as multiple forms of discrimination, exploitation, and stigmatization. One of the strategies put forward by the Global Compact on Migration addresses both gender inequalities and gender-based violence through national labor laws, employment policies and programs. This approach recognizes the independence, agency and leadership of women and seeks to reduce their vulnerability by increasing their access to labor markets. 🎯 Points Test Review! ✅One of the key areas of future reform outlined in the Migration Strategy was exploring ‘a reformed points test to better identify migrants who will drive Australia’s long-term prosperity. The points test should focus on targeting the skills Australia needs now and in the future. ✅The Department of Home Affairs is inviting submissions to the review of the points test until 5 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time on Friday 24 May 2024. Submissions can be made on the Department’s website www.homeaffairs.gov.au.
