This message is critically important: “time-to-treatment” is a significant factor in determining whether a stroke patient lives; and if so, how they are able to recover from the affects of the stroke, including severity of permanent disabilities. For years, we have called for more attention to this opportunity which still is not getting the right priority. It can only be solved if policy makers, providers, and innovators work together. Improving time-to-treatment, not only produces better patient outcomes, but it can significantly reduce the cost of care associated with stroke and stroke recovery. Today marks a milestone in Alzheimer’s disease treatment with the MHRA approving lecanemab, the first disease modifying treatment, for use in the UK. However, NICE have not approved it for use via the NHS. We recognise the impact that this announcement has on the 26,000+ people affected by dementia across North Central and North East London, and Mid and South Essex. We need to further understand the effect this may have on widening existing health inequalities within dementia care, if people cannot access this treatment via the NHS. The time is now to work with health systems to review preparedness for disease modifying treatments for dementia. UCLPartners is committed to leading this change, facilitating collaboration, and ensuring that as many people as possible stand to benefit from these advancements in the future. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked or there is bleeding in the brain. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, resulting in life-threatening issues.
