We are proud to recognize the contributions of #ASNM members Donald Crammond and Jeffrey Balzer PhD to a pivotal study recently published in the European Spine Journal. Their research details the use of somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) changes in predicting perioperative neurological injury in pediatric idiopathic scoliosis correction surgery. 📚 Study Highlights: The study reviewed data on 3778 pediatric patients with idiopathic scoliosis undergoing correction with intraoperative neuromonitoring (#IONM). Among their findings was that transient and persistent SSEP changes had specificities of 96.8% and 99.1%, and diagnostic odds ratio of 16.6 and 59, respectively. This significant work underscores the importance of SSEP monitoring to enhance surgical outcomes in pediatric scoliosis fusion surgery. "The many ways in which ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels can be exploited for human benefit have expanded over recent decades. Especially since the early 2000s, research has improved our understanding of the components and mechanisms of KATP channels. They have the potential to have a prominent role in cardiac surgery. Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic activation of KATP channels has been shown to be both cardioprotective and neuroprotective in early basic science and clinical studies. However, many questions remain unanswered and require further study, necessitating further basic science work and large human clinical trials. A research review co-authored by Himanshu Gupta, MD, Director of Cardiac Imaging at Valley Medical Group and Juan B. Grau, MD, FACS, FACC, Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery, The Valley Hospital, was recently published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology. The authors explored two method of septal reduction therapy (SRT) for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) - alcohol septal ablation and septal myectomy - and highlight the need for further training of septal myectomy surgeons to ensure access to optimal septal reduction therapies for patients with HCM. SRT relieves left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and helps to reduce symptoms in patients with obstructive HCM. AHRQ-funded researchers identified nine factors that increased a patient's risk for developing pneumonia following cardiac surgery, including the length of the surgery and the time it takes to remove a breathing tube, according to a study published in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Postoperative pneumonia, among the most common complications following cardiac surgery, was associated with increased risks of other conditions and death, an average increase in hospital lengths of stay of seven to nine days, and additional healthcare expenditures from $12,000 to $14,000. These findings may inform future quality improvement efforts to reduce patients' risks of contracting postoperative pneumonia.
