Are you facing questions about parenthood during interviews? Here's a tip to handle it professionally: If asked about kids, respond: "Excuse me, why is this question relevant for this role?" If they mention travel and flexibility, stay professional: "So, the right question is about my willingness to travel and flexibility? I'm comfortable committing to X% travel and have a track record of managing flexibility effectively in previous roles." Remember, interviews showcase your ability to handle tough conversations and demonstrate executive/sales skills. Don't let outdated stereotypes deter you. On the other hand, I've seen male candidates openly prioritizing family. Let's champion equality in parenting responsibilities. Ah, the joys of being a temporary work/stay-at-home nurse to my two sick kiddos led me down the unexpected rabbit hole of "Love is Blind" thanks to my daughter's TV choices. 📺 But you know what? It got me thinking. 🤔 Isn't job hunting a bit like blind dating on reality TV? Unless you're besties with the hiring manager, you're basically hoping for the best without really knowing what you're getting into. Most candidates play it safe, asking about the basics like salary and vacation days, but few dare to dive into the juicy stuff like company culture and career growth. 🤷♂️ Sure, we're not proposing marriage after a week in a pod, but maybe we should take a cue from the show and peel back the layers during interviews. Let's get nosy, ask the real questions, and ensure you're making an informed decision. After all, who wants a messy breakup when it could all have been prevented by asking the right questions upfront? 💔🚫

I am a diehard listener to the "Daily Jay" on the Calm app—7 minutes of mental & wellness inspiration from Jay Shetty. Today's message "Identity, interests & a more multifaceted life" resonated with me. I've always defined myself with what I do for work. And this became a huge struggle when business was slow and I started looking for full-time employment from July 2020-December 2023. After attending countless webinars on job hunting, revising my resume continuously to match the job description, reaching out to former colleagues for a referral, interviewing for less than a dozen jobs and getting rejection emails on a Friday afternoon, I realized in late December that I wasn't meant to work for anyone else. During this time, I faced a couple of challenges that have helped to define who I am outside of what I do for work—getting my elderly mother on medicaid and becoming the president of my local temple. We all have an assortment of amazing strengths, qualities and interests and we don't always attend to them. Instead of spending all of your energy on one area of your life— sow some other seeds and see what grows. Here's a great exercise. Visualize yourself at a meet & greet. You have a name tag and right below your name, you can write who you are and what you do (not just in work) but in life. Are you spending your time & energies on the multifaceted parts of your identity? Are you exploring your various passions & interests? Who are you outside of work? My name tag would describe me as: Master juggler, gift giver and passionate connector of people, places and things. What would you write to describe yourself on your name tag?

Few days ago I had a conversation with a friend and he told me that someone sent a job link to him and told him not to send to anyone even after applying for it, I carefully thought about this how can people be so selfish with opportunities but rather keep telling you to pray but can’t make a way for you? A fun little story… My almost 4 year old is full of questions. The other day she came up to me with a question about our dog Bailee. 4 YO: If Bailee is a dog, why does she have a “human-being” mama (me)? Me: She also has a doggy mama. Her doggy mama lives in another home with another human family 4 YO: Does she miss her doggy mama? Me: Maybe, but I think she really loves being in our family and this home 4 YO: Yea, maybe because she has a fluffy bed and gets lots of treats? Me: Yes, that’s probably why 4 YO: Oh, and also because she get’s to jump on me when I come home from school! A sweet little exchange that got me thinking. As we look to make a job change or as we move through new roles in our lives – humans and animals all look for similar things: 1.    Space and comfort to execute (the fluffy bed) 2.    Rewards and recognition (the treats) and 3.    A Sense of Purpose (jumping and playing with my daughter to bring her happiness) Much of my job as an Executive Search Consultant is in assessing how well a candidate can fit into an organization or role, through the lens of these 3 factors. And much of my job as a Mum is to just provide the guidance, so that my daughter can arrive at the answers herself 😊 What are things you’d look for in a new role? "I don’t like not having all the answers," said my husband last year about our new (shy) Goldendoodle puppy. Surrounded by neighbors on all sides with dogs, it was tough not knowing the “right thing to do” with our Christmas present of a pup, especially when it seems like everyone else knows. It feels vulnerable. And when you feel exposed, defenses go up. We can see people with more knowledge (and expertise) in a specific area as a threat instead of a partner. Isn't the job search similar? We are at our most sensitive when we put ourselves out there: 👉🏻 Facing tough questions about our career history, 👉🏻 Enduring judgment (even criticism) about our story and 👉🏻 Experiencing rejection (gulp!). It's hard! It can make us want to crawl back into bed and put the covers over our head, not allowing anyone in. Buddy up, instead of bowing out. Seek out people in your network that know more. Throw away the comparison measuring stick and share in their wealth of knowledge and experience for your good. 🐾 My best example? I told fellow career pro, ✒️Claire M. Davis🖋️ about our family Christmas present. She immediately sent me resources, podcasts and genuine encouragement, which in turn gave me (and my family) confidence in pet ownership. A year later, we have a confident dog that loves to stay outside longer than she should and greet (read: bark) at our neighbors 😂 No one has all the answers. Don't feel like you have to. I spent 10 years ( 2009 to 2019 ) working and eventually running one of the biggest chauffeur companies in Los Angeles. The hardest part, hands down, was knowing how to swim with the sharks and not get eaten. There is truly an art one must master in order to work around toxic people. Once one masters this, they usually realize anything is possible, including leaving the "security" of the job itself. Top 5 things I did to work with and coincide with highly toxic people in my corporate office were: 1. Show up to work and be on time, and by on time, I mean early. 2. Always give a genuine greeting, even if the other person appears to have no interest in greeting you or anyone else. 3.Listen closely when they talk about something good in their life and ask them about it whenever you see each other. 4.NEVER get sucked in to talking about someone else by someone else. They will surely tell them you did. Remember, anyone that will talk about other people to you will talk about you to other people. 5.Pray for them, be as empathetic as you can to their faults. Do not take their attacks personal, even when they are.
