I know many women who have a hard time falling asleep during the menopausal transition. I have a solution for that. I treat perimenopausal (and menopausal) women, and I am going through that myself. When I do not get a good night's sleep, it affects my job performance, it makes me prone to a low tolerance with people and circumstances, I have mood symptoms, and this puts me at risk for long-term illnesses like high blood pressure and heart disease. Here is what I have found helps with sleep. 1)Magnesium 2)Melatonin 3)Progesterone 4)Relieving hot flashes and night sweats (with hormonal and nonhormonal therapies) Magnesium helps with muscle and nervous system relaxation, leading to better and longer sleep. Melatonin helps with sleep. The body naturally produces this hormone at night, and its levels decline with age. Progesterone helps induce sleep. Relieving hot flashes and night sweats using hormonal and nonhormonal therapies allows for a more restful sleep. My name is Dr Kudzai Dombo. I am in the Los Angeles area, and I help women navigate the challenges of the menopausal transition. If you would like more information, feel free to DM me!

A 2023 study by Simplyhealth found that 23% of women suffering menopausal symptoms had considered leaving their jobs altogether, 14% were planning on doing it. One of the main culprits behind the decision is brain fog. Just like ‘baby brain’ after having a child is linked to an adjustment in hormone levels, (and a lack of sleep), the same can happen in perimenopause and onwards. If brain fog is the first symptom or the only symptom then it can be quite scary, especially for women with a family history of dementia. Many women believe that they are experiencing early onset dementia, and it takes a toll on self confidence. The good news: Evidence suggests that it is a temporary symptom and that full cognitive ability will be regained in post menopause years. It’s one thing to forget where you put your glasses when they are on your head, or to walk into a room and forget why you are there, but forgetting to log a critical report at work or forgetting the name of a product during a presentation is when it becomes an issue. Some women feel that they are being pushed out of their jobs due to their inability to focus, others no longer have the confidence to do their jobs. Brain fog covers forgetfulness, lack of mental clarity, slower reaction time, inability to focus and poor concentration, and 60% of mid-life women claim to have suffered to some degree. Declining hormones are not the only reason for brain fog. Dehydration, low blood sugar levels, covid-19, undiagnosed autoimmune disorders, lack of sleep, SIBO, lack of vitamins, not enough exercise, undiagnosed thyroid issues, medications and stress can cause brain fog as well. It is always worth checking for other root causes, especially if it is the only menopause symptom, but if it is accompanied by other symptoms, then it may well be the result of declining oestrogen and testosterone levels. While HRT will help enormously to replace the hormones, CBT can help with confidence issues, and the non-negotiables, (diet, sleep, exercise, hydration), and lowering stress levels are also key in beginning to turn it around. It isn’t always easy to relax when you feel like your job is on the line, but talking it through is very important to reduce stress levels.

The menopausal transition is a significant change in a woman's life and the challenges of menopausal symptoms can have lasting impacts on women's health. Menopause can come with an increased risk of developing anxiety and low mood. If we’re going through menopause, as our body works to adjust to decreased levels of estrogen and progesterone our mood can suffer, we can feel irritable and stressed, and we may feel more anxious. During menopause, it’s common to experience irritability, sadness, lack of motivation, aggressiveness, problems focusing, stress, difficulty concentrating, and depression. Much like constant premenstrual syndrome (PMS), these effects can cause emotional strain. The time of life when many women experience menopause is a time when we might be having significant life changes, too. Our children might be growing up and leaving home, we might need to downsize our house, we could be caring for elderly relatives or experiencing bereavement. All of these things can affect how we feel. If you have a pre-existing mental health problem, it’s possible that the effects of menopause could cause a relapse or change to your mental health.
