#storytelling A river flowed dividing a forest into two animal kingdoms. On one side, the king, lion visited all the animals weekly to check on their well-being. While all the animals lived happily, the crocodile was unhappy. The lion being the king, tried his best to comfort the crocodile but he still remained dissatisfied. During a visit, the lion suggested to the crocodile to move to the kingdom on the opposite side of the river, assuring that its king would take care of him. The crocodile agreed and moved. The lion on the opposite side too, made weekly visits and found the crocodile to be unhappy. Sooner, the lion skipped visiting the crocodile and this made him furious. He decided to meet the king and found the lion on the river bed. The lion forcefully pushed the crocodile in the water. To his own surprise, the crocodile discovered that he could swim and understood that his purpose was to live both on land and water. He was overwhelmed with joy. He thanked the lion for teaching him a valuable lesson. But the lion told him to thank his own king at the other side of the river and said: 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 attempted to swim. 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥. Now, many of us are like that crocodile. We’re going big to make hunger history. We’re working on a big, bold moonshot goal to cut hunger in half for all Minnesotans by 2030. New knowledge and partnerships have led us to a defining moment in the fight against hunger. We need bold new solutions, stronger connections, and a way to clearly measure our progress so we can understand what’s working. It’s time to get to work. With the help of the whole community including our corporate partners Cargill and Target, we’ll reduce hunger today by increasing access to emergency food, prevent hunger tomorrow with policy, partnerships and one-on-one services, and track progress to ensure we’re effective and accountable.

Instead of getting sucked in to mindless buying just because there’s “a bargain” at our fingertips, let’s pause and consider how we are firstly #CitizensNotConsumers - and opt for reuse, repair or swapping as default starting point. The volunteering tide is changing. Growing demands on people's time and resources means thinking differently about how we involve volunteers. Although not new information, it is a little intimidating when, like so many other charities, we're powered by volunteers. Regular volunteering is crucial to the running of our Baby Banks and supporting an increasing numbers of families. It's scary to question that. That said, we've recently introduced a calendar of "one-off" volunteering days at Little Village. It means those who'd love to get involved but can't commit each week, can do just that. Embraced by our existing volunteers, site teams, values and mission: they can help support families in poverty. It's not the answer to all by any means - we've got lots of tweaks and live learning still to come. But they're very popular, reaffirming to us it is not people's willingness to volunteer that is waning but that life is overwhelming, now more than ever. Our one-off days have welcomed new supporters, friends and family members of volunteers but also professional connections such as Adelaide Peck. It's widening our network with mission-fuelled impact as we've met midwives, DWP colleagues, students, old friends and new. All of which can now carry our share our message to their networks. Massive shout-out to Helen & Daniela who took this little idea, this little seed of "microvolunteering" and grown it into a flourishing flower... #Microvolunteering #oneoffvolunteering #volunteermanagement
