As we celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, it’s important to highlight the crucial role that seafarers play in our global economy and everyday lives. These brave men and women face unique challenges and risks as they navigate the world’s oceans. Here are our tips to help seafarers stay safe and healthy at sea: 1. Training and Certification: Proper training and certification are the foundation of safety at sea. Ensure you’re equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform your duties safely. 2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear the appropriate PPE for your role. This could include helmets, safety shoes, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and life jackets. 3. Safe Lifting Techniques: Protect your back by using safe lifting techniques. Always bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting heavy objects. 4. Fall Prevention: Slips, trips, and falls are common accidents on ships. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep walkways clear of hazards. 5. Fire Safety: Know the location of fire extinguishers and how to use them. Regularly participate in fire drills and know your role in the event of a fire. 6. Substance-Free Workplace: Maintain a drug- and alcohol-free workplace to ensure the safety of all crew members. 7. Risk Assessment: Before starting any task, calculate the risk involved. Identify and mitigate potential risks before they become problems. #DayoftheSeafarer #SafetyTipsAtSea

✫ Innovative C-Suite Leader in Maritime Industry ✫ Transformational Operations & Global Strategy ✫ Decorated Career in US Navy ✫ Master Mariner
Day of the Seafarer! This year, the global theme focuses on safety at sea, honoring the selfless servants who transport over 90% of the world's goods and fuels on cargo ships and freighters. Did you know there are 1.89 million seafarers on 74,000 ships worldwide, hailing from diverse nationalities, cultures and creeds. Seafarers make immense sacrifices, spending up to nine months at sea, facing dangers like extreme weather, piracy, and isolation. In 2015 alone, there were 2,687 casualties at sea, underscoring the risks inherent in this essential occupation. Communication remains a challenge, with approximately two-thirds of ship crews lacking means of communication while at sea. Additionally, only 2% of seafarers are women, highlighting the need for greater gender diversity in the sector. Organizations like the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) play a crucial role in supporting women in maritime roles. Amidst these challenges, Let's recognize and appreciate the dedication of seafarers worldwide this Day of the Seafarer. #DayoftheSeafarer #SafetyAtSea #SeafarersAppreciation #peoplefirstbeprofessionbeagoodshipmate

Today, safety at sea includes protecting seafarers from online threats, a crucial aspect that is sometimes overlooked. With ships becoming more connected and seafarers relying on personal devices, the risk of cyberattacks such as phishing, malware, and unauthorized access has increased significantly. These cyber-threats can disrupt ship operations, compromise sensitive data, and harm seafarers personally. Ensuring online safety is vital to prevent operational disruptions and protect seafarers' personal and professional lives. To address these risks, it's essential to educate seafarers on cybersecurity best practices, such as recognizing phishing attempts, using strong passwords, and securing personal devices. Ships should be equipped with robust security measures and secure communication channels. Regular cybersecurity audits can help identify and mitigate vulnerabilities. By prioritizing both physical and online safety, we can create a safer, more secure environment for seafarers.

As we observe Day of the Seafarer, a special day established by the International Maritime Organization in 2010 to “recognize the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international trade, the world economy, and civil society as a whole,” I applaud all seafarers and the important work they do every day, but want to recognize the critical segment of seafarers that I am privileged to represent – professional maritime pilots. Nearly eighty years ago the United States Supreme Court so aptly described the vital role pilots play: “In order to avoid invisible hazards, vessels approaching and leaving ports must be conducted from and to open waters by persons intimately familiar with the local waters. The pilot’s job generally requires that he go outside the harbor’s entrance in a small boat to meet incoming ships, board them and direct their course from open water to the port. The same service is performed for vessels leaving the port. Pilots are thus indispensable cogs in the transportation system of every maritime economy. Their work prevents traffic congestion and accidents which would impair navigation in and to the ports. It affects the safety of lives and cargo, the cost and time expended in port calls, and, in some measure, the competitive attractiveness of particular ports.” Kotch v. Board of River Port Pilot Commissioners, 330 U.S. 552, 558, 1947 AMC 535 (1947).

Seafarer Safety: The Vital Role of Drills As we approach this year’s Day of the Seafarer on the 25th of June, it’s a good time to reflect on the importance of drills in ensuring the safety of our seafarers. These drills are a vital part of daily life on board, preparing the crew for any emergency that might arise. Drills are not just a statutory requirement; they are essential for creating a safer workplace in the maritime sector. Effective drills require careful planning, preparation, and design to ensure they are both realistic and practical. Regular practice ensures everyone knows their role in an emergency and helps prepare crews to remain calm and to act efficiently under pressure. #DayOfTheSeafarer #SOLAS

28th April: The World Day for Safety and Health at Work strives to increase understanding of the significance of establishing a secure and healthy work setting. This event is vital because workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities can have devastating impacts on employees, their loved ones, and economies. It promotes the adoption of a "Prevention Culture," where the right to a safe and healthy work environment is upheld across all organizational levels. It is crucial to prioritize the occupational safety and health of seafarers on ships. Various important initiatives and programs like BBS initiatives, ISM code, MLC, STCW guidelines, IACS guidelines, PSC inspection guidelines have been established to enhance the safety and health practices of seafarers continuously. These initiatives and programs, along with comprehensive regulatory frameworks, training requirements, and industry collaboration, contribute to continuous improvement in seafarers' occupational safety and health practices. They aim to protect the well-being of seafarers, prevent accidents and injuries, and ensure a safe working environment aboard ships. #seafarersarekeyworkers #merchantnavy #shipping #mariners #humansatsea #maritime

Visibility is critical. There is so much more we can be doing to improve the safety and welfare of our seafarers and raising awareness of the challenges they face is needed to collaboratively reach solutions. #safety #welfare #crew #seafarers
"I am thrilled that the IMO is making the link between safety and seafarers very visible this year and spotlighting the efforts that our crew take to keep our oceans protected, cargo safe and trade flowing," says Intent Communications CEO Namrata Nadkarni in SAFETY4SEA. She points out that it is high time that we invest in the safety of our seafarers and make them feel valued. This might come in the form of — 💫 user-friendly training 💫 mental health support 💫 proper insurance 💫 equipment-specific training ... and most importantly, a culture where people are able to speak freely about problems they identify or ways to make life at sea better! We must create a psychologically safe work-space so that our seafarers can not just thrive but have a say in our sector.
