💡 #AI integration has become a huge development trend worldwide. In line with UNIDO’s focus on AI and following the trend, this year’s #BridgeforCities event will feature “Improving governance and the application of artificial intelligence (AI)” as one of the five focus areas. 📘 As the event concept notes: “Effective governance is essential for addressing the complex challenges of #urbanization and ensuring the delivery of quality public services to residents. The event will explore the role of AI technologies in enhancing #UrbanGovernance, improving decision-making processes, and increasing the efficiency of service delivery. By leveraging data analytics, predictive modeling, and citizen engagement platforms, cities can enhance transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance. Oxford Insights has released AI Governance Index for 2023. While USA continues leads the index, followed closely by Singapore and the UK.A notable shift in 2023 sees half of the AI strategies emerging from low and lower-middle-income countries, with Rwanda setting a precedent. High-income nations continue to dominate the Technology Sector, though countries like Malaysia and the BRIC nations are making significant strides. As a past regional expert for South Asia, I'm intrigued by the shifts seen in India's performance in the AI Governance Index 2023 by Oxford Insights. India has experienced a shift, moving from 32nd in 2022 to 40th in 2023 globally. This change highlights the evolving landscape of AI governance and readiness. India continues to demonstrate strong performance in the Government and Technology Sector pillars, ranking in the top 30 and 50 globally, respectively. However, there are challenges in the Data and Infrastructure pillar, where India ranks 66th globally. These insights underscore the importance of balanced growth across all dimensions of AI readiness. [U.S. and Singapore announce joint AI principles and collaboration] 🌐 The United States and Singapore have announced joint principles and collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence! 🤝 Both countries are committed to promoting responsible AI development and use, adhering to principles of transparency, accountability, and security. While the framework aligns with global standards, challenges in coordination and governance are slowing progress. 🔍 Key Findings and Implications: Coordination and Governance Gaps: Effective collaboration between the EU and member states on AI investment and strategy is lacking, limiting the impact of the plans. Unclear and Outdated Targets: Vague long-term investment targets for AI are not adequately monitored or updated, reducing accountability. Slow Progress on Data Sharing and Regulation: Efforts to enable data sharing and establish AI regulations are still in early stages, hindering ecosystem growth. Limited Impact of Enablers: Initiatives to provide capital support and infrastructure for AI innovation have faced delays and coordination issues, limiting their effectiveness. Gaps in Exploiting Research Results: There is insufficient support for the commercialization and application of AI research, reducing the return on investment. 🔑 The Way Forward: Strengthen governance mechanisms. Set clearer and more measurable targets. Accelerate data and regulatory framework implementation. Improve the translation of AI research into real-world innovation and impact. INO will therefore contribute to the implementation of collaborative R&D projects to develop trusted artificial intelligence by bringing together several experts who will develop solutions adopted by several industrial sectors in Quebec.
