The Department for Culture, Media and Sport Committee (CMS) will examine the current challenges faced by the British film and high-end television industry (HETV). Inward investment into film and high-end television (HETV) in the U.K. during 2022 reached a record height of £6.27 billion ($7.72 billion), statistics from the British Film Institute (BFI) revealed earlier this year. This is the highest ever reported figure and is £1.83 billion higher than for the pre-pandemic year 2019. Some 69% of the £6.27 billion spend was contributed by HETV production with £4.30 billion, with feature film production contributing £1.97 billion. The inquiry comes 20 years after a previous committee’s report on the British film industry, which made recommendations around the tax regime and training and development and helped shape the modern British film industry.

Last night, the Brazilian Congress approved a significant step towards supporting our local film industry by reinstating the quota for local productions. Instead of specifying a fixed number of days, it emphasizes a minimum number of sessions and a diverse range of titles. These specifics will be determined by future executive decree. What's crucial is that the regulation is designed to ensure "variety, diversity, balanced competition, and effective presence" of Brazilian feature films in high-demand sessions. This is a move towards a more dynamic and inclusive film landscape. As we look ahead, questions arise about how this will play out. With no screen limit per movie, mechanisms must be implemented to guarantee that local productions receive fair and favorable programming. This month I’m celebrating 25 years as a member of the British Film Institute (BFI). Here’s 5 reasons you should become a member: (1) The BFI is home to the National Archive, one of the largest film archives in the world, with nearly 1 million films and TV programmes. As a member, you get privileged access to the catalogue, including special screenings, both physically at the BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX (Britain’s biggest screen) and digitally through the BFI Player. (2) Being a member means that you actively contribute to the National Archive’s efforts to restore, preserve and showcase classic British films, including their role in tracking down sought-after missing titles that don't exist in any archive. (3) The BFI organises the annual @London Film Festival, one of the top film festivals internationally, and showcases a diverse array of films from different genres and countries. As a member you get priority booking. (4) As a BFI member you have access to their excellent riverside bars, cafe and shop. (Full transparency, you don’t need to be a member to frequent the bars but you do get money off in the BFI Shop.) (5) BFI membership starts at the bargain price of £39 a year. That’s 75p a week. #Reunion: A film festival has launched on Réunion Island, a French department in the Indian Ocean. Réunion might be a French territory, east of Madagascar, but its population is diverse, with a strong African presence shaped by slavery and colonialism, with East African and Malagasy influences. The first edition of the Festival International du Film de l'Océan Indien (FIFOI) or Indian Ocean International Film Festival (FIFOI) is set for April 8th to 12th, 2024, in Reunion Island, which has a population of less than 1 million people. It will showcase primarily locally-produced short films and a few features - fiction, documentary, and animation - highlighting the island's film scene. More broadly, it will spotlight cinema from the entire Indian Ocean region, including areas on the east coast of Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Somalia, etc), as well as South Africa, and other African island nations situated in the Indian Ocean like Seychelles and Mauritius. Also expected to launch, although in 2025, is an accompanying Film Market. For the inaugural edition, the precursor to the Market will be called The Professional Meetings, which will provide networking opportunities as a start. Supported by the local Hors Champs Réunion association and state-owned national public broadcaster France Télévisions, FIFOI is the 3rd and final festival within the France Télévisions group for France's overseas territories. It follows FIFO in Polynesia and FIFAC in the Antilles-Caribbean, both major film events in their respective regions. The same goal has been set for FIFOI in Réunion. While the festival will not be entirely competitive in its first year, the audience will be invited to vote for their favorite films. Winners will be awarded the Audience Prize on the closing night of FIFOI 2024, with financial support from France Télévisions.
