Day 1 of 2024
There’s a lot to be thankful for over the last year. We’ve been fortunate to have made good strides with Vice, fantastic connections with people, and incredible partnerships. There’s a palpable sense of excitement moving into this year.
We ended 2023 by wrapping up an engagement with some incredibly unique and unforgettable people at Calix. They allowed us to bring some insights and outside perspectives into their processes. Our hearts go to them over the holidays as they navigate difficult and unexpected challenges.
Recently, a consistent theme has shown up. It has been echoed by people I hold in high regard and by multiple professional circumstances.
“Progress over Perfection”
So often, people want to deliver a perfect and polished product from the start. I know I’ve been guilty of it myself. Whether that's a process, an event, an initiative, content, career moves, personal decisions, or responses, it’s all the same. Action and effort are the catalysts for outcomes. It’s easy to justify inactivity or, worse yet, try to solve for every variable before we even enter “the arena.”
So much in life is just showing up and doing the work. It can be messy, poorly executed, and sometimes downright awful, but those reps lead to refinement, the refinements lead to mastery, and without the stumbles along the way, no progress would be made.
There are many ways to say the same thing, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time, etc., but two resonate with me.
One eloquent, one concise
“The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred with dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again; because there is no effort without error and shortcoming” —-Theodore Roosevelt.
“Just send it”--- Unknown.
Resolutions are a constant evolution and not just a New Year's fad to be forgotten in the upcoming weeks or when it gets inconvenient.
With that said, I’d love to hear what “arenas” you plan on stepping into this year or if you have any plans to “Just send it?”
