A research investigation co-authored by Suneet Mittal, MD, FACC, FHRS, Chair of the Cardiovascular Service Line for Valley Health System, was recently published in JAMA. The study assessed the safety and effectiveness of percutaneous left atrial appendage ligation in addition to pulmonary vein isolation for non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Results showed no significant difference in arrhythmia freedom at 12 months compared to ablation alone (64.3% vs. 59.9%). However, the combined treatment was safe, with a low 30-day adverse event rate of 3.4%.
